Patterson Park
I met with a friend today at the High Grounds coffee house across from the Patterson creative arts center on Eastern Avenue. Great brew. We then took a walk around the park. A fabulous day to walk. I had never seen the redone boat lake. It's real nice.
Patterson Park has turned into a wonderful amenity to those who live nearby. Much credit is due to the Friends of Patterson Park who do a yeoman's job in making sure that there is enough programming to draw people to the park.

I wish people in my community would do a better job of using Carroll Park. It's beautiful, safe, and the Mt. Clare Museum House is there.

I moved back to the Patterson Park area because it has become such a nice neighborhood again and the home prices are not sky-high like south of the park. It still has a way to go but I have loved it in the area. Make sure you try to get to the Parade of Lanterns event in the park during Halloween.

Patterson vs. Carroll
It takes much civic leadership and effort to make sure that interesting programs like the Parade of Lanterns draw people to the park. Patterson boosters have done a good job in that respect.
Carroll Park's views of the downtown skyline are far superior to Patterson's, but the programming aspect seems totally lacking. Yes, Mt. Clare museum does its thing, but it's not for everyone. And B&O Railroad Museum's plans to create an active corridor from Fulton to its compound never really happened.
I wonder whether Pigtown could take the lead and get some music to the park next summer. Rockabilly would be good because it's popular with so many population groups. What do you think, carolott, is this for you?

Patterson Park in Baltimore Magazine's Food Issue
The Patterson Park area is mentioned in two articles in the October issue of Baltimore Magazine, which centers on food in Baltimore. The first mention is about the success of the restaurant Three... and its "stellar offerings"; the second is about the Patterson Park Community Development Corporation's green building project Decker Walk Envirowhomes.

There was a jazz concert this summer -- it's definitely something I'd like to see more often than once a year. I wouldn't mind looking into what needs to be done to get a concert series going.
On December 8th, Mt. Clare will be holding their annual open house and holiday greens sale...I think it starts at 10 and goes to 4.

I hate seeing how downhill pigtown & the surrounding area has declined during the 90's. I grew up in that area and Carroll Park was a neighborhood place. There were always little league games and kids playing. I went to school at Diggs Johnson and remember having to take gym at the park. I have pictures of when George Bush (sr) landed at the park in his helicopter (I believe it was for an Orioles game, I'd have to check with my dad). I'd like to see the neighborhood clean up and definitely see more appropriate use of the park. By the way, I agree with you. It has been and always will be PIGTOWN not Washington Village!!

WOOT!!!!
I really hate "Washington Village" -- it sounds like a third-rate rest home...like the ones you see on 60 Minutes that are under investigation for some kind of elder abuse.
I was excited to see that the new soccer fields are being used -- the ones in Carroll Park. I wish we had a pickup team here -- I would definitely join.

Yipes! I guess I'm off the reservation on this one too. I don't live there, so you can call yourselves what you like. But it just makes me wonder about folks who prefer the name Pigtown to Washington Village. You are right, Washington Village sounds somewhat institutional, but Pigtown is certainly no better. I'm sure there's some obscure historical significance to the name,(and I'm sure there's a fabulous link to it). But is that known by other than the locals? When I was looking to buy in the city, I saw some listings on Homedatabase which mentioned they were in Pigtown and without even knowing the area I said, ah...no. Just my $.02
