Red Emma's is the mother of radicalism in Baltimore. That IWW (Wobblies)-inspired organization currentlly operates a bookstore at St. Paul and Madison. It also hosts various activities at an old church at 2640 St. Paul.

Now comes the big news: Red Emma's is moving to the old North Avenue market, which is more central and where parking is easier. This promises to be a shot in the arm for the area's revitalization efforts because Red Emma's serves as a magnet.

Here in its release:

Building a Better Red Emma's | Indiegogo

It's just a fashion statement - a perfect fit for North Avenue.

better - a Marxist organization contributing to gentrification.

As a bourgeois liberal, I can only say - Yay!

My favorite thing about Red Emmas is the harmonious relationship they have with St. John's Church to use their building. A stranger marriage one could not predict.

Default Stuff happens

Baltimore, as these threads confirm, is a city of doubters. Add to that the fact that many residents, including posters, choose to form their opinions not on the basis of first-hand experience but outdated stereotypes. Station North is a case in point.

My prediction is that Station North will this year burst into public consciousness in ways that no longer can be ignored. Just start a self-guided tour from the 1500 block Greenmount Avenue, across from the cemetery.

This is what I want you to do. Look at Greenmount Senior Center and the adjoining City Arts apartment/studio building and then turn onto Oliver. A row of newly-constructed two-story rowhouses of modern design now adjoins City Arts. At Barclay, look at the construction going on that will transform a long-vacant industrial building into a citywide school for design.

This, in my judgment, is big stuff, considering all the improvements coming to North Avenue.

Gentrification, galloping gentrification, is written all over Station North.

its big stuff considering that when I last resideed in Baltimore in 1993, had I announced that I intended to take a walk on North Ave west from Greenmount all the way to Charles Street, my wife would have started planning the funeral right as soon as I left the house.

I will try to take a look when Im in town next.

Two new theatres are getting renovated on North Ave. soon; Centre Theatre and Parkway. Those two will truly turn around North Ave. Everything south of North Ave is well on its way.
