Was that a Polynesian-style place like the OP is asking about? I only ate there once, and although I remember it being good, I don't remember much more than that. Where was it? I seem to remember it being on N. Charles St., but can't be sure.

A few years ago, I spotted a Jimmy Wu's ashtray at a flea market and bought it to go along with the dish from the Rice Bowl in Glen Burnie that I picked up an an antiques store on Harford Rd.
Jimmy Wu's was before my time, but I've been told it was located where Paul Chen's Hong Kong restaurant is now (near Charles St. and 25th St. in Charles Village).

I have fabulous memories of this great restaurant, which I believe was named national restaurant of the year for 1966 (not sure what category, as that was so many years ago). My grandparents used to take our family to Mr. Wu's restaurant at least 2 to 3 Sundays every month (1958 to 1969 when we moved out of the area) and we had the same private room every time. Our grandfather owned and operated the covered Esso gas station about a rock's throw away, also on Charles St. Mr. Wu and Gramps were high school classmates who became proprietors of their respective business at approximately the same timeframe. Mr. Wu and his family were wonderful folks, and as I recall, the head bartender (Wally?) used to have a Manhattan in my Grandma's hand before she could sit down. Of course, the same was true of us kids with a Roy Rogers. I don't recall us ever ordering any meals, as Gramps would just say "it's great to see you Jimmy, bring us your best again tonight." We would spend 2 to 3 hours talking and laughing with family, Mr. Wu, and the staff, all the while course after amazing course would find it's way to our table. Hard to find decent Cantonese food in San Antonio...yep, I sure miss Mr. Wu's great food.

The New China Inn was the late great Jimmy Wu featuring Wan Long Pour the bountiful bartender. The restaurant sign was saved in the Balt. Industrial Museum. There were vintage black & white photos of a very young Jimmy Wu in suit & tie when he arrived here inside the restaurant. Great old days for sure!
