Port of Baltimore led nation in two cargo categories in 2012, officials say - baltimoresun.com


"The Port of Baltimore led the nation in vehicle and roll on/roll off traffic in 2012 and surpassed previous marks for general cargo handling, state officials announced Wednesday.

The port's public and private terminals moved 652,000 vehicles last year, up 18 percent from 2011. Roll on/roll off cargo, consisting of farm and construction machinery, was up 16 percent to 1.09 million tons. General cargo at the public terminals was 9.59 million tons, an increase of eight percent over 2011 and beating the old mark of 8.96 million tons set in 2008.

In a statement, Gov. Martin O'Malley praised the port's productivity and said the port's future "has never looked brighter."

"The port has successfully withstood a challenging economy and has outperformed many other major U.S. ports thanks to shrewd infrastructure investments, unique job-creating business partnerships, and long-term contracts with major international shipping companies," O'Malley said.

Combined, the port's public and private marine terminals reported 36.8 million tons of cargo crossed their docks last year, with a total dollar value of $54 billion. That amount was a record and placed Baltimore ninth nationally for dollar value of foreign cargo."
