I currently live in Silver Spring but I'm considering attending graduate school at Morgan State. While I could commute there a few days a week, I think it would be better for me to move to B'more until I graduate. I keep reading how Baltimore is not the safest place to be, but can anyone give me insight on safety in the neighborhoods surrounding Morgan?

Default Up to you

I am sure you will receive a wide spectrum of replies to your query. Those who want to warn you about the neighborhood around Morgan will point to a number of murders over the years. At the same time, hundreds of students live nearby every year and nothing bad ever happens to them.
There are a number of apartment complexes within a two-mile radius. There also are lots of rowhouse apartments. My advice to you is to ride around the area and see for yourself. Get your priorities right: You go to a university to get an education. Wherever you live will only be for a limited time.
As to commuting to Silver Spring, forget it. Better to live near campus.

Is there a possibility that you could get housing on campus?

Lake Montebello is right next to Morgan State and they just cleaned it up, put a bike path and such around it. It's very nice. If you get off of Hillen Road and go into the neighborhoods back there, there are some really modest and cute homes. You should def take Barante's advice though and take a drive around some time.

We live west of morgan state and have found it to be a very pleasant area. On the west side of campus you will have to drive to get to shopping restaurants etc. On the east side these things could be walkable, but you might find the crime to be a little higher.

You have probably heard this, but check this site out for rentals you are considering City of Baltimore, Maryland Police Department - Interactive Geographic Display of Crimes (http://141.157.54.34/bpdmaps/police.htm - broken link).
My wife and I obsessed over it a little too much, but it can be a useful tool.

We live in a little pocket of row homes south of Argonne and north of Round Hill. All the neighbors are very nice and there is no "thuginess" at all.

Morgan State is right around the corner from my home. I would try to get housing on campus. Just don't rent an apartment in any of the surrounding areas and if you decide to, do your research. I love our neighborhood, but I feel like we're on an island, where nearly everything around us is sketchy. I've heard of some incidents at the various apartment complexes that border our neighborhood. There was also an incident that involved a MSU student being shot recently, however I don't believe it was an isolated incident, as he was trying to get his life together, sounds like he had a somewhat sketchy past.
