Hello guys! I'm from the Bay Area (California) and I will be in Baltimore this summer for various reasons for a week or so (reasons that are too long to explain) and for the most part I will be alone during the daytime. I'm visiting a friend that will be renting a room in a families house and I will be allowed to stay the nights in his rented room but this friend will be working from 9-5 and I doubt the family wants a stranger in their house while they're gone as well.

The room that I'll be sleeping is in the Roland Park area which as I understand is generally a safe area. During the daytime while my friend is working I'll be out on my own in a city I've never been to. So I was wondering if you guys who live in Baltimore and know the city well could help me with a few questions:

1. What areas of Baltimore should I avoid that are unsafe, especially for someone who will be alone? (I'm a skinny twenty year old white kid)

2. What stuff should I check out/do that show off your cool city? (I'm not a fan of museums)

3. Any other Baltimore tips?

Thanks guys!

here are a few travel tips-
Baltimore travel guide - Wikitravel
Baltimore - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
baltimore has some fun stuff to do-check out camden yards if u like baseball and visit DC if you have a chance (lots of things to see and do there as well)-take the MARC commuter train to/from Baltimore and DC (weekdays only)-be prepared for humidity in Maryland (its a lot hotter than CA during summer)

Yea I guess I forgot to mention that while I'm there my friend and I plan to visit DC (as well as NYC). But I just made the thread about exploration of Baltimore specifically. I assume the fare to get to DC from Baltimore isn't too bad so it's definitely gonna happen.

Yea I've been warned about the humidity, we don't really get humidity or much of it here so I don't know what to expect. Also thanks for the links! Will check it out!

Stay away from most of west baltimore city....Baltimore is weird because it works in spots...one block is really good and the next can be bad.

Areas close to Roland Park (only talking city and not county) are Johns Hopkins, Charles Village, Station North, Mt. Vernon. Basically you can take St. Paul from the JHU area straight down and run through them all. When you're downtown check out Federal Hill, Canton, Fells point. Patterson Park is really nice too...but depending on what area and time you get there things may change...during the day it is really nice.

Pretty much stay west of Greenmount/York Rd and east of the I-83 and you should be fine.

Moving from north to south:

However from 25th St to North Avenue, stay west of St Paul St.

Once St Paul intersects with I-83, stay west of I-83 and east of Eutaw St until you get downtown.

Once you're downtown, most of the areas that border the harbor have been gentrified (Canton, Fells Point, Federal Hill, Highlandtown)

Venturing outside these areas you're gambling with your life. YMMV.

Good luck and stay vigilant.

Wow -- you won't even let 'em go to Calvert street. [The city isn't that bad outside the areas you mentioned; have a bit of faith in folks.]

OP: Checkout the other thread regarding MTA buses and take either of those mentioned for a decent view. I would suggest, however, that you should not get off the bus in unfamiliar territory.
