I'm well-aware of the horrors of such a commute, but I'd like help making the best of the bad here.
I like the 95 to ICC option, but where to exit to continue to Bethesda? Routes 28, 29, other? Thanks in advance, folks.

On a recommendation, I tried it during rush hour, and it was very smooth...until I got to the 270 juncture. Is it a poor choice in the long run?

google map it

Unless you KNOW there's a bad accident in the 95/495 stretch between powder mill and 29
(which certainly happens) there's really no good reason to get off the 95/495 route.

And even then... the ICC (to 29) can't save more than a couple miles.

as always, YM(literally)MV

Thanks for weighing in. Certainly sounds rational. Perhaps the better question is one of timing instead (e.g., when in the morning is 495 not a parking lot?). Thanks again!

Bumping this thread. Am I correct that there no railway option to get from downtown Baltimore to Bethesda?

Also, what's the average driving time during rush hour, 8am and 4pm? (Both 95->495 and 95->ICC) I'm looking for both estimates. Thanks!

I used to do that drive....unpredictable nightmare - 495 is the worst. ICC is expensive and has a 55mph speed limit with police ready to pull you over.

No direct train route. Think my best time was maybe 45 mins to an hour on a holiday. Average of 1 1/2 hrs depending on the day. Returning to Bmore wasn't as bad.

Bethesda metro to Shady Grove --> Rideon to Gaithersburg --> ICC commuter to BWI --> BWI Lightrail to Baltimore City.

They raised the ICC speed limit to 60, but that doesn't help much. The only way I would make that a regular commute is off hours. Avoid rush hour altogether.

Can I ask why no one in the local government seems to have studied the feasibility of building a new rail line from Baltimore to Bethesda/Rockville? Clearly the demand is there. Nightmarish bumper-to-bumper traffic along the I-95, 495, and ICC is certainly proof that the single line into DC's Union Station is not enough. Why would they not improve their public transit? The ICC hasn't resolved this dilemma one bit, as is clear from these posts.
