Default Organized crime in Baltimore

Baltimore is a wide open city. I read that the Philly mob and the Gambino family had some territory in Baltimore. There was also Julius the lord Salisbury from Baltimore who was a Jewish Gangster who was with Meyer Lansky(watch the BET series American Gangsters Melvin Williams episode). He ran the whole east coast policy racket and his homebase of operation was in The Block(Red Light District) in Baltimore. The Kansas City family had some territory in D.C. Heres some links were I got this info...

Not sure how much truth there is to that....but other than probably Seattle...these are the only 2 major cities that never really had an official "family".
This is an interesting subject matter. I dont' think there's some special deal. The Washington, D.C. area is newer than other East Coast cities and is a boomtown today and a lot of the newer cities aren't in the limelight for organized crime....Tampa, Orlando, Dallas, Charlotte, Raleigh, Denver, Salt Lake City probably don't have a major Italian crime family.

Tampa definitely does. For years it was run by the Trafficante family. The Gambinos are there now and John Gotti Jr. was just arrested there yesterday by the police.

Denver was run by the Smalldones. Not sure what the situation is there right now. Dallas has a satellite extension of many families..and Jack Ruby was in the mob.

DC is a bit newer than the other cities but the mob wasn't really in any of the cities before it was built...so it had an "even chance" as anybody to get the Italian immigrants.

Let's not exaggerate here.

There were several cities where organized crime played a significant role at certain points in the city's history. Providence, Boston, New York, Newark and Philadelphia certainly come to mind. In those cities the local mobs had significant influence in the political sphere and over the local unions, and the mob's word carried a fair amount of weight, more so that many people realized.

But to say that Denver is "run" by a family is ridiculous. All cities have some type of organized crime, but the influence of organized crime in most American cities is extremely negligable.

Default Early Mafia

There is some talk about Baltimore in early books about organized crime by Hank Messick and others. Open city was his verdict as well. He looked at some gambling links, mentioning names like Tubby Schwartz and Irvin Kovens, the political power broker. At one point Kovens owned a piece of Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas plus race tacks. (Another Maryland family heavily into Vegas were the Wynns, who used to rule Waldorf).
Some testimony about the Baltimore situation may be found in the transcript of the 1951 Kefauver committee hearings before the U.S. Senate. Google.
Ovid Demaris wrote a lot of books about Vegas and some Baltimore connections. He did zillions of books and articles for the pulp magazines which may or may not be available.
Unrelated, there is a terrific new book out about the birth of Mafia in the U.S.: The First Family by Mike Dash.

Interesting thread. History will be the judge, but IMO the banksters today are far worse and dangerous than any immigrant organized crime syndicate ever was.
