Portland
THE BAD NEWS
I have been living in Portland for 4 years and anyone and everyone considering moving to Portland should know that it really does rain (almost everyday) for 7-8 months.
And yes, the city's liberal policies on homelessness and drugs leads to colonies (tribes) of street kids and homeless settlements (urban campsites).
Within the first year of living here someone burglarized my home and stole my electronics... they also deficated on my patio (which leads me to believe it was a homeless person or meth addict.)
Oh, and meth... let me tell you about Portland and meth.
Ok, let's not.
The cost of living in Portland IS NOT CHEAP. People who think the cost of living in Portland and buying a home is cheap in Portland is likely comparing that to NYC, SF, LA, and other infamously expensive cities.
And the statement about the worlds most educated waiters is also a reality.
And literal.
EVERYONE WANTS TO MOVE TO PORTLAND.
In fact, I've purposely tried to tell the worst things about Portland so no one else would move here... it's the secret code, the handshake agreement you make when you finally land a good job and settle in Portland. DISCOURAGE OTHERS FROM MOVING HERE.
THE GOOD NEWS
I moved here from Chicago and I can't keep a secret.
Portland is as close to heaven as it comes.
I moved here and found a job, doing the same work, and made $14,000 more than I was making in Chicago. I got lucky though.
All of the above is true, but compared to what I've seen and experienced in Chicago, Portland is cream puffs, candy sticks, wrapped with puppy dogs.
The beach is 1.25 - 1.5 hours.
The mountain 1 - 1.5 hours.
The high desert 2.5 hours
Amazing hiking, camping, windsailing - less than 1 hour.
I've never been to Baltimore. Baltimore has a buzz about it so I've been doing background inquiry which is why I landed here.
