I know David Simon, I worked with him for years, he is my friend. The source is David himself. Ask him, he'll tell ya.

I can tell you from personal experience, people do not like having their picture taken without permission. The last time someone did it to me, they ended up with a broken camera -- happened at Union Station as I was getting into a cab.
It's just rude to get in someone's face and start snapping away, or even from a distance.

Were you/are you a Sunpaper reporter? I wish I knew him or could meet him, he's one of my very favorite writers. I was introduced to his work (the novel "Homicide") in the Publications Design program at UB, and have read everything I can get my hands on by him since. His ability to get a reader into the head of the character is literally unparalleled.

He lives here in Baltimore and can often be found walking around. I've only had the pleasure of meeting him once, and I have never watched The Wire...I did read The Corner, though, so it was nice to put a face to the person who wrote the book.

Corners in west Baltimore
Here is the truth about corners and the culture of west baltimore-paritcular African American.
If you know a corner is a corner because of drug dealing-avoid it. If you don't know-drug dealing is related to violence-so why would you put yourself in armsway. Other corners are occupied by people, mostly men who use it for social purposes.

Just be ORIGINAL. We know there is crime in Baltimore City, but expose the gang activity in Carroll, Howard or Harford County for a change.

Randallstown, Woodlawn -- they tore down the projects downtown and some of the former project-dwellers were reloctated to Randallstown and Woodlawn -- this helped speed up the negative change in those communities.

Homicide is NOT a novel! It's a work of journalism: David Simon's one year following the Homicide detectives of the city around. Subtitle: One Year on the Killing Streets.

I'm sorry to wake you up, my friend. Much of West Baltimore is still like that. Only The Corner keeps moving around.

I'm aware of that, I know it's non-fiction. I typed the post quickly and used the term "novel" incorrectly as a synonym for "book" --- sorry.
