*Get ready Baltimore!

Three restaurants on Friday's all-Baltimore episode of 'Diners, Drive-ins and Dives'

Three restaurants on Friday's all-Baltimore episode of 'Diners, Drive-ins and Dives' on Food Network - Baltimore Sun

Three Baltimore restaurants are featured on a new episode of Guy Fieri's long-running Food Network show, "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives."

Here's the network's description of the "All Baltimore, All the Time" episode, which premieres Friday at 10 p.m.:
Lloyd Fox, Baltimore Sun

"This trip, Guy's hitting the pavement for a tasty tour of Baltimore. First, just off Dundalk Ave, the local legend cranking out all kinds of crab plates. Then in the Hamilton neighborhood, the farm-to-table spot cooking up bacon-wrapped meatloaf and Asian braised pork. And in the Upper Fells Point neighborhood, the funky pizza joint firing up some outta bounds pies and savory risotto balls."

The local legend is Jimmy's Famous Seafood, the farm-to-table spot is Clementine and the Upper Fells Point pizza joint is Johnny Rad's.

Jimmy's is hosting a viewing party for the episode on Friday starting at 7 p.m., according to co-owner Tony Minadakis.
Johnny Rad's invited patrons to drop by on Friday night for a viewing party via a Facebook post: "Thank you all who nominated us for the show," the message said. "And we hope you'll understand when we're busy with a line out the door because 'We're on the TeeVee!.'

Y'know, I worked in food service for a long, long time, mostly back of the house fine dining. Jimmy's (I admit I've never been there) menu is one of the truly grossest (literally) I've seen. Does anyone really want to eat a special that consists of a rack of BBQ ribs with a crab cake? Or "Bourbon-glazed" shrimp on a cheeseburger? Looks like their solution to everything is to cover any item with crab imperial and send it out. Not to be snobby, but I'm surprised that such places still exist.
I live not far from Clementine, and have been there a few times. They claim their specialty is house-made charcuterie. Technically, this refers solely to pork butchery and utilization and preservation by a variety of methods, but the term has been extended to apply to various smoked, cured, pickled, preserved items, as well as pates, terrines, mousses, sausages, crepinettes, galantines. ballotines, etc., etc., of the garde manger purvienue. Disappointing, and over priced, I've always thought.
Gotta hand it to Johnny Rads, tho'. Very good pies, old wave meets new wave, with simple, fresh ingredients. Price is right, crust and sauces are very good, and portions are just right, not skimpy or over-loaded.
I guess one outta three ain't bad, but are any of these places truly representative of a great culinary tradition, that is uniquely "Baltimore?"

Jimmy's opened back in 1974, and was going strong in the 1970s and the early 1980s when the food served at fine dining restaurants was much different. Most seafood served then was fried. Today's Jimmy's is like a flash back in time.

I love Johnny Rad's. Definitely one of my favorite bars to hang out at.

I read an article about Guy pertaining to his restaurant at Horseshoe Casino here in Baltimore. He stated that he has family here. He's done two episodes about Baltimore restaurants (he visited Joe Squared on a previous episode).
