Issue CCW to any law-abiding, clinically sane, financially secure residents who seeks one. Mandatory harsh sentences for those who shouldn't have guns but do - the war on drugs was successful in one thing: putting A LOT of drug offender in jail even though using drugs to harm one's self is far less harmful than using guns to harm others, and tough as nail gun control laws along with increase in armed law-abiding citizens will dramatically reduce crime rates.

It'll never happen, but I often don't understand why you have to take one side when the solution is obvious on both side of the argument - just like increasing taxes on those who can afford to pay more taxes and reduce wasteful spending (like our multi-trillion dollar wars).

End the failed War on Drugs. Put in strong incentives not to have children if they can't be supported. Lower the property tax to spur reinvestment in teh neighborhoods. Stop jury nullification (that one will be hard). Crack down on repeat violent offenders.

Amen!

But you're not getting either the war on drugs (huge boon for private prisons, who lobbies HARD with GOP), and you're not going to get the birth control access people need with the religious right wing nutso our fellow citizens voted to Congress. Finally, pro-lifers won't care about the baby once it's born, in fact they bemoan these unwanted babies as welfare leeches, right?

Repeat violent offenders, that may get bipartisan support.

Yep, I agree with you, what you say above is true.

When Fred Bealefield was BPD commish, he led a crackdown on violent repeat offenders and it did have an impact on violent crime. I was bummed when he stepped down after 5 years. He was restoring pride and mission to the department.

Unfortunately, any realistic approach to unwanted births borders on eugenics and folks cry racism at the mention of it. Fact is, these unwanted, unparented children grow up to cost lots of $$$ in school system costs, welfare, and eventually incarceration. The schools can't enforce discipline, the parents aren't held accountable and the courts area revolving door and recidivism rates are high. Our policies and actions do not discourage, but rather encourage these unwanted children.

Most of my methods would be unconstitutional and violate basic human rights.
