A friend of mine just rented a fabulous two-level upstairs apartment on Linwood, overlooking Patterson Park. He also rents studio space in Highlandtown. His take is that some areas, including Greektown, are going Hispanic. In fact, he thinks that within two years much of the now-dormant Eastern Avenue retail district in Highlandtown will be Hispanic.

I will miss Greektown. It's one of the few places to get authentic Greek products.

Highlandtown is truely bizarre. It definitely is becoming more Hispanic yet there are brand new places going up behind the shopping on Eastern Avenue that are going for big-bucks. So I am not quite sure where it will all end up. I do some volunteer work teaching ESL to adults in this community and many of them tell me that have moved up to Highlandtown because they were priced out of the areas closer to Broadway. Many of these self-rehab folks higher the Hispanics to do the work while living in a place and then put it on the market at a price they could not afford. Greektown is also becoming more Hispanic. But, I drove up O"Donnell Street to get on to 95 and a whole slew of new places are going up where that dump (literally) used to be. The entire southeast section of Baltimore from Broadway all the way out to the Home Depot on Eastern is becoming more and more Hispanic. Speaking of which... does anyone remember what upper Broadway looked like before the Hispanics started moving in and fixing that stuff up????

It is definitely turning more Hispanic and more Yuppy at the same time. The old working class of blacks and whites seem to be getting inched out of there. Its one of my favorite neighborhoods. I hope it is able to hold to some of the past.
