To reiterate, rape is a problem at college campuses everywhere and I would tend to argue that it is much more a reflection of the University than the city. If I heard there was a rape at my alma mater (UD), I would not suddenly believe the town of Newark, DE was a bad place to live.

These rapist were not students. But men from the city who "walked" onto campus.

A student who raped (different matter). But this had more to do with campus security and general safety of the city.

I am accepting a job by Hunt Valley and need advice on where to live in the Baltimore area. I'm originally from the DC area (Northern Virginia) and have little recollection of my trips to Baltimore except that Camden Yards and the harbor were awesome.

Moving from: Madison, WI, home of the polar vortex...we live in the hipster/hippy part of town, so good amount of farm-to-table restaurants and odd bars, close to parks for outdoors stuff and the dog
Living situation: have a wife, cat and dog...currently in the "tweener" stage of married life where we're past partying but won't have kids for another year or two
Rent limit: Hoping $1800 for a 2BR/2BA, prefer townhouse/single house, but open to apartments too
Other things we're looking for: place where commute to work is under 30 minutes, close to artsy stuff (my wife is an artist), safe (seems this is the hardest to pinpoint for me), close to public transportation, decent amount of restaurants close by

Any suggestions on neighborhoods, commute routes to avoid, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
When you read most of these horrible comments about Balt, makes you think never to even fly through. But its not all bad as it is made out to be. Baltimore is just as bad as any other big cities out there but you can find little gems.

My advice to you

1. Mount Washington. I have lived here for almost 6 years now. It has deteriorated a little bit but not as much as most other places. You can walk down the hill to the train station even when its dark. There are a couple of nice bars down the hill and some eating joins. And I think there is an art studio there too. I know there is a pottery place. Mostly professionals live in Mt Washington (Getting out in the morning is a hassle with traffic but nothing significantly major). Normally takes me on average 15 minutes on a heavy traffic day. Less than 10 with not traffic.

2. Cockeysville/Hunt valley. This is also generally a good place and York road has a lot of bars and happening places. Hunt valley has some nice restaurants and the mall in hunt valley is decent to hang out. Cockeyville/Hunt Valley give you the proximity to Towson (Towson University), so the whole city is filled with eating places, bars, and a mall.

All these places give you walking distance to the Light Rail which has a decent schedule and goes all the way to the airport. (Just avoid it early morning + late evenings when kids are coming from school. Too much buffoonery).

3. Another really decent place is Lutherville/Timonium which is off of Falls Road (This is like 10 minutes to the Falls Road train stop), connects to route 83 which takes you down town and connects to 695 which goes around Baltimore and connects you to 95 in both directions. Litherville is more quite than the other two places and may be a little more expensive. You need a car to survive in lutherville as I have never seen any buses there. (But I could be wrong).

All these places are away from the city and will shield you from some of the randomness that some people mentioned.
