So I covered this topic somewhat in an earlier thread (Baltimore City SAT scores). The National Assessment of Educational Progress just came out and the results are staggering (Just 37% of U.S. High School Seniors Prepared for College Math and Reading, Test Shows - WSJ)

Excerpts:

In reading, 49% of Asian students performed at or above proficiency last year. So did 46% of white students, 25% of Hispanic students and 17% of black students.

In math, 47% of Asian students performed at or above proficiency. So did 32% of white students, 12% of Hispanic students and 7% of black students.

It's not reasonable to think that Baltimore City schools will ever be successful with their current population of students.

It all goes back to institutional racism. Black students don't do well on the SATs because their parents are less likely to have at least a Bachelor's degree.

That is more than partially true, but, personal responsibility for your own intellectual development should outweigh any outside influences.

Baltiplanner is raising his white supremacist/white power gloved fist up again. Him, like many others, refuse to acknowledge and accept that there is such an entity called, "institutional racism."

SAT scores doesn't measure the full spectrum of an individual's intelligence and Baltiplanner knows this.

Sunflowery,

Baltiplanner is basically stating Baltimore will never flourish as long as there is the population of of uneducated and ineducable young African American/Blacks living in Baltimore City. Individuals like him, come out of Charles Murray's Bell Curve Summer Camp workshop where there they trade statistical and analysis on how unintelligent Black people are via/race and IQ.

SAT is not a measure of intelligence; it is a measure of how prepared for college the student is. It IS a successful measure for likelihood of graduating college.

BaltPlanner, you have touched on a difficult topic.

Suppose that the reason black SAT scores are so low is because black students really are less intelligent and less respectful of learning than students of any other race -- all available evidence suggests strongly that this is indeed the case. The question, then, is what to do.

One answer is to simply accept the existence of a permanent underclass; that seems to be the way we are going. Said underclass, however, has destroyed Baltimore's public school system. But it's not necessarily their low academic ability that does the most harm. Rather, it is their thuggish behavior that spoils the public schools to the extent that responsible parents who can't afford to go private won't live within the city limits. This drags the city down.

Unfortunately, as you can see from the simpleminded responses that you have so far, rectifying this is not going to be easy, as the grievance industry runs on claims of "white supremacy" and "institutional racism" and related claptrap rather than thinking in terms of ability, personal responsibility, and cultural mores.

How odd it seems that Asians and Latinos are not subject to the same. Even more interesting is the marvelous capacity to learn and prosper shown by Jews for thousands of years in the face of murderous persecution.

To be honest, a lot of parents don't realize that they need to provide good schooling while their children are in elementary school. As a future teacher, I will not accept any falsehoods that Black students are less intelligent than students of other races.

If parents can't get their kids into charter or private schools, than they need to be provided with some great tutoring. What I do not like about the SATs is that students that are receiving special education services probably aren't receiving much help in order to do well.

Some of those racists psychologists tried to measure intelligence by pouring mustard seeds into the skulls of black people. It's amusing how some of them are still reading those type of research results.

Blacks as a group will never be as successful academically as whites or Asians. Only about 10% of blacks can achieve at the academic level of the average white.

Baltimore's schools will always be a failure factory with its current demographics.

Allow people to dropout like the old days. The 8th grade dropouts can go back to the fields or hire themselves out as maids.
