Baltimore county VS. Baltimore

Which has low crime rate, decent apartments, shopping, etc?

Speaking on broad generalities, the city offers a far more urban lifestyle with more things to do and day to day conveniences close by. It also offers much higher crime, higher taxes, and less access to major goods. Trade-offs, trade-offs, trade-offs.

Of course, if you desire a suburban lifestyle, there is no trade-off. Move to the county.

If you want urban and being in the County Towson is your best bet. It has a version of a downtown and supporting neighborhoods ranging from apartments row homes duplexes to single family detached. Walkable shopping and entertainment. If you want suburban but in the city North Baltimore ,NE Baltimore , or NW Baltimore( in that order) is likely for you. There are dozens of neighborhoods in those general sections so you post one I'm sure people will give you opinions. Personally if you want urban might as well live in the city and in the suburbs if you like the suburbs. The City's suburban style neighborhoods resemble those in the County though the taxes are likely double schools are not as good and crime is generally higher though there are alternatives low crime areas in the city

The suburbans will just about always have lower crime rate than the city in any area. The shopping will be comparable but the main draw to the city is you don't need a car and usually most of your needs are within walking distance.

Living in the city more or less doubles property taxes and car insurance, and as Alex observed, cities always have more crime, inner cities the most of all. But there are plenty of safe places to live in Baltimore City. Mount Washington comes to mind.

That hasn't been true in my experience. Do your homework. There is a crime map of Maryland someplace on the internet. Baltimore is also a city of neighborhoods, and so is Baltimore County. Phoenix != Arbutus and Bolton Hill != Patterson Park even though those areas are both in Baltimore City or both in Baltimore County.

There are many places to live in these areas. I'd recommend getting an apartment, and then taking your time to visit areas and learn about the history, amenities and residents before making a decision.

*Why do people think Towson is Baltimore County's best place for an urban feel?! I don't get that feel at all. Yeah, there are a few little eateries, quaint/quirky shops, but it's still Baltimore Country (County)!
