I grew up at 2227 E. Baltimore St and 18 S. Patterson Pk Ave. That was right next door to the YMCA (or was it YWCA?) It always amazes me that the people most positive about the Patterson Pk area have moved there from someplace else. I think it's great that the area is being revitalized but it looks and feels the same to me. The park is a shadow of it's former self. Look at the run down entrance to the Park on the corner of Baltimore and Patterson Pk. There used to be a low cast iron fence that ran around the park, now torn down. The pagoda was been renovated a number of years ago but I think it's still closed to the public.Yea , Baltimore is a city of neighborhoods... most of them run down and poor except for Canton and the areas surrounding the inner harbor. I have 45 years of perspective and 35 as a contractor in the city and it looks pretty much the same to me. Maybe people moving in from outside will bring new life to the city.

It is true that Patterson Park declined with the neighborhood. However both the neighborhood and the park are in the midst of a turnaround. Yes, the cast-iron fence is gone (because scavengers stole sections and sold them to antique dealers). But anyone who is badmouthing park has not been there in recent times.

Ok--let's go through these one by one:
a. The Pagoda: It's open every Sunday for four hours in the afternoon for anyone who wants to visit. It is maintained by the Friends of Patterson Park.
b. The destruction of the park was a long process. The rehabbing of the park has begun but will continue to be a long process
c. Recent improvements include the complete cleaning and revamping of the boat lake which is now a spectacular enjoyment for many including myself. The ongoing restauration of the Pagoda. The reworking of the fountain and it now operates again.
Planting of numerous trees. The cleaning of the Polish monument. There are many more and I suggest you refer to the The Friends of Patterson Park, Inc.
d. I have a good friend who decided to sell her home in the 2900 block of Baltimore and move to NC about 10 years ago. She sold it for 130. That home sold again recently for 390. That alone is a sign that the area is now in demand. By the way, she wished she had stayed.
e. You say the neighborhoods are run down???? hehehe Tell that to the folks in Roland Park, Guilford, Federal Hill, Fells Point, Bolton Hill, Butchers Hill, Locust Point, etc. I could go on and on with that one. No my dear, run down is now Glen Burnie!!!!
f. Finally, I originally lived in Canton but sold that a few years ago when it was becoming popular. I moved out northeast but came back to this area (Patterson Park) because of the huge improvements occuring. It may look the same to you but live here and you will see the difference.

By the way, I remember the park 25 years ago. It was a dump. It is a huge improvement now. They actually cut the grass!!!!!

llike jonjj said..you can't complete redo the park overnight...although it seems like they have.

Anytime I call Tim Almaguer of the Friends of Patterson Park he will let me in with my students for various school projects that we need to look out over the town. I am not sure I would just leave it open to the public...its too beautiful.

What about the pool? What about the two new playgrounds? What about the improvements to the "east park"? The Casino? Boat lake? The Park is an absolute gem.

And don't forget that the country's third urban Audubon Center will be going in across the street from Patterson Park. The other two centers are in Los Angeles and New York City.

Smile Low expectations...

can sometimes result in a pleasant surprise. I certainly hope that is the case with both Patterson Park and with Baltimore, specifically.
