I am thinking about teaching in Baltimore City Schools as a special education teacher. I have 10 years experience (masters +20 credits), worked in NYC, Florida & California public inner city schools in wealthy and poor districts and I have elementary, middle and high school experience. I am tough but cultured from traveling. Grew up in the inner city of Detroit so nothing scares me. I would like to hear opinions from those who have actually worked in Baltimore City Schools.

Tell me your opinions on the following and anything else that would sway my decision.

1. Salary
2. Advancement potential
3. Retirement package
4. Hiring difficulties
5. Atmosphere

Never mind. I'll be told I don't know what I'm talking about.

I'll come back in later to correct, I'd call them stupidities but instead I'll call them misinformation.

First the good news: Baltimore City attracts students with good salaries.
Advancement potential is also probably also good if you manage to stick around.
I don't know anything about the retirement package but I do know a city teacher that retired after what I consider a rather short career.
City Schools are running a HUGE deficit this year. I can't imagine that they are going to do much hiring.

The atmosphere in city schools is much worse than average. Some teachers are lucky enough to end up in schools with good leadership.
