Hello everyone,
New to the forums but not to Baltimore . I am 19 and have live in Baltimore all of my life and I have been to many different churches, but none of them are theologically liberal. Is there anyone here that goes to one and if so can you tell me where it is? I am thinking about going to the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore as it sounds like a pretty good Liberal Church. There is always the Baltimore Ethical Society. Also a Unitarian church in Towson.
Also, there is a really cool young rabbi Geoffrey Basik, who was at the Bolton Street Synagogue as an interim rabbi. He now is in charge of a congregation that is forming in Mount Washington. Kol HaLev is Baltimore's new synagogue community in the making. I am not Jewish but I met him at a friend's funeral and shiva. I told that once he got a synagogue of his own I would attend. I'll do so later in the spring. |

Please pardon my ignorance in the matter, but what exactly do you mean by "theologically liberal?" Do you mean that they have adapted the Holy Bible to better reflect modern ideologies? Do you mean that they don't discriminate against gay people?

Lol, it is a mixture of both actually.

I doubt it, seeing as all the mainline denominations such as PCUSA, mainline Baptist, United Methodist, Evangelical Lutheran, etc are all theologically liberal.

I forgot to mention that Unitarian is liberal in just about every way, so you might be happy there. You don't even have to be a Christian to belong to that church as many are Buddhists, secular humanists, etc.

The Towson Unitarian Church has always had a considerable percentage of members who are Jewish in mixed marriages. I went there to a lecture on the Bush administration's attempt to strangle civil liberties in the name of ntional security. I was shocked at how old the membership seemed to be. I guess young people either don't go to church or veer to charismatic denominations.
Back to liberalism. The Unitarian Church owns a Boston publishing house called The Beacon Press. While it is not as well known as it was in the 1960s, it has featured edgy authors. Among recent ones is Sherrilyn Ifill, a University of Maryland law professor who did a book about lynchings in Maryland. |
