Could anyone offer advice on commuting from Pa. To APG? I have heard there are vans that carpool in from Pa and parts of De. My preference is one of those two areas due to more affordable housing and closer to family.

Anyone know folks that make that commute and from how far out? Suggestions?

Thanks

Have you checked with human resources at APG? They should help to set you up with carpools/vans to work.

James, was job prospecting nothing set in stone yet it's just I noticed parts of Pa are 40-50 miles so seem doable considering telework is an option as well. Delaware I hear schools aren't the best but not sure if that's legit.

Where in PA are you commuting from? Generally speaking, you'll be commuting against rush hour traffic, and the commute isn't too long, but there are a lot of country roads you'll need to take depending on where you are, unless you are near I-83 (the exception to the rule as you'll hit Baltimore traffic) or I-476 if you're a super commuter. You'll have to pay an $8 toll if you use I-95 to cross the Susquehanna River, but if you're coming from Lancaster or Chester County, crossing US 1 over the Conowingo Dam bridge is by far the more viable option. Here are some sample commute times:

Delta, PA: 45 min.
Oxford, PA: 50 min.
Wakefield, PA: 45 min.
Kennett Square, PA: 1 hr. 5 min.
Coatesville: 1 hr. 15 min.
Lancaster: 1 hr. 15 min.
Shrewsbury, PA: 1 hr. 15 min.
Media, PA: 1 hr. 20 min.
York: 1 hr. 25 min.
Philadelphia: 1 hr. 30 min.

If you or know someone who lives in or near central Philadelphia, The Northeast Regional does stop at Abredeen and it takes about 50 minutes from 30th St. Station to Abredeen, but it only runs at 6:07 AM and leaves at 4:10 PM and 8:16 PM from Abredeen back to Philly. You'll need a shuttle, Uber, Lyft, or cab though to drive a few more minutes from town to base though, unless if you have a carpooler pick you or a buddy up. You'll save time and after tolls and gas, doesn't cost too much more, and perhaps could save you more if there are transit benefits by your employer.

Delaware is a state my friend. There is more than one school district and its not like your stuck in the state of Mississippi...

As for housing costs, take a look in Maryland, you might be surprised. I understand that Baltimore and Harford might be too expensive, but Cecil County might be within your price range, is much closer than PA, and likely is a better school system, unless you are in Bucks, Chester or Montgomery County PA. Great resale value there too.

Prefer gun laws in Pa and closer to friends in family. I realize I would sacrifice a commute but hopefully APG offers flex time and telework.
