Default Baltimore to Shady Grove RD

Hey I am considering getting a place in Baltimore, however I work in Gaithersburg near Shady Grove Rd. What is the best way to commute there? the MARC train? Thanks for your help!

It can be done but it will be a very time-consuming commute. You can take the MARC train from Baltimore to Union Station. You then have to take the Metro to Shady Grove.
Unless you have a compelling reason to live in Baltimore, I would seriously consider something closer, such as Silver Spring.

Exactly right. The MARC is of no use for that trip.

Yes you would need to take the Penn Line of the MARC from Penn Station here in Baltimore, headed towards Washington, DC. In Washington, the MARC stops at Union Station. From Union Station, you would need to get on the Red Line of the METRO subway, and I do believe the train is marked SHADY GROVE. I am not familiar with this end of the Metro, so I don't know where exactly the Metro station is located once you come to the end of the line in Shady Grove.

As someone else mentioned, this is a very long commute, and you might do better finding a place to live that's closer to your workplace in Gaithersburg. Otherwise, plan on tacking on an additional 2 hours each way to your day.

So funny! I did this exact commute from Baltimore every day for 18 looooong haarrrrd months right out of college. It was rough.

I tried every possible combination to cut down the 1+ hr trip one way...just was no getting around the time, but there was getting around sitting on 495W to go up 270N.

I tried going 95 -> 695 -> 70 -> 270 and you were moving always, but still took an hour.

I tried going south from 70 via other routes like 97, but too many 2 lane roads with school buses blocking your way, that was aggravating.

I found the easiest was 95 -> 495 -> 270. You cruise down 95 (I went avg 80-85mph), once you hit the 95/495 split, it starts to get bad. All the exits with cars merging onto 495 between 95 and 270 slows it down horribly. That is about a 15 mile stretch, it would always take me 30-35mins to get through.

Once past that, 270N is going against traffic so you get to chuckle at the poor saps sitting in the south bound lane haha.

I think shady grove is exit 11 on 270, but its been almost 10 yrs since I've done this commute

With the distance adn time I would definitely not recommend living in Baltimore, find a place in Montgomery County, if you want cheaper find a place in PG County or Frederick.
