I just fell asleep reading this thread.
Maryland is Maryland, why does it need a label? |

One needs to only look at the cannon on top of Fed Hill pointed towards the city of Baltimore to realize that this city is on the Mason-Dixon line, or the South's most northern town, or the North's most southern town, or a southern town stuck in the Northeast, or a southern enclave, or a rust belt industrial city, or a home of northern liberals and southern rebs,.....or any other numerous ways to describe the city. Its all of these..thats why its Baltimore. Thats why it kicks a$$.

krakenten -- Congrats on your first post. Hope to see many more.
You correctly summarized Baltimore's Civil War divisions. This city also has quite a number of memorials to the Confederacy. At least no one here refers to it as the War of Northern Aggression. . . |

Born and raised Marylander here. Both of my kids were born at Annapolis Hospital, near the Annapolis Harbor. Maryland is completely Northern in culture. There is absolutely nothing "Southern" about Maryland. Maybe it once was many years ago, but not over recent modern times. Anyone who says it is, has never been to the "real" south. Mid-atlantic is a perfect description. Baltimore is more laid back, Washington is more "yuppie". That's my take after being born there and lived there for 36 years, having a southern born mother, and living in the real south for more than a decade. Marylanders are "yankees" to southerners, all the way.

barante, do you refer to the Punitive Expedition against the White Trash?
aka, The Late Unpleasantness, or the Rebellion? Look up Harry Gilmor(Baltimore's first police commissioner after the Civil War)or visit the Confederate War Memorial on Mount Royal Avenue. Or Raphael Semmes, decendents of whom founded Semmes, Bowen and Semmes, a distinguished local law firm-Semmes was a resident of Annapolis who commanded the Confederate commerce raider 'Alabama', destroyed in an epic duel with the USS Kearsarge off Cherbourg-there's a song. Maryland regiments served on both sides during the war(and never simultainously, for a wonder!). Baltimore is a dysfunctional place-now, what to do about it? |

A year ago I was leaving the Frederick Douglass Maritime Park in Fells Point after my class's graduation that we held there. As I left the building I noticed an elderly couple that looked lost. They were looking for the Fells Water Taxi. I walked them down to where it was located. As we were walking they explained to me that they were in here in Baltimore to bring some artifacts to Ft. McHenry. The man was the grandson..great grandson? of the mayor of Baltimore during the Civil War before being imprisoned at Ft. McHenry. I believe his last name was Brown, correct? i was upset I didn't have more time to talk to him and see what he had.

Ever notice that the events of 1861-65 get little mention hereabouts?
Immigration and industrialization seem to have eradicated the Southern nature of the City, except in the virulent racism and occasional flashes of gentility that one finds in Baltimore. She was once an elegant beauty, but booze, dope and hard times have brought her low. Looks like she's trying to get back on her feet, and I for one wish her well, for I loved her. |

I think it still has a tatse of the South...but clearly not as much as it used to. Its hard to even find a "real" Baltimore accent around here.

I think most people in Baltimore who know even a little bit about its history--like me--know that it was very divided during the Civil War. Just look at the diverse mix of monuments. |

You need to meet Gloria and her sister. Boy are those two authentic Baltimore "gals".
