Baltimore/Maryland are Mid-Atlantic
I was just wondering something....if just because a lot of people from New York/New Jersey move south to Maryland, why do they start calling Maryland a Northern State? Maryland by definition of the Federal Goverment is Southern state by definition and a mid-atlantic state South of the Mason Dixon line by geography. People are roping it in with places like Massachussetts and Vermont as the northeast. Maryland borders Virginia (southern) Washington DC (southeastern conference NHL) Delaware (former slave state) West Virginia (once part of Virginia) and Pennsylvania, which is the first state above the Mason Dixon line. All of these states are Southeastern or Mid Atlantic region, which does infact include even PA. Maryland is not the Northeast just because Baltimore is getting filled with northern transplants from dying jobless states in the actual Northeast.

Do people really care whether they live in the north, the south, the mid-atlantic...whatever?

You know he's around here somewhere, Lol.
Actually, by definition, NY NJ, and PA are classified as Middle Atlantic. The other Northeastern states are New England.

to me Baltimore is in the north while D.C. is in the south. Baltimore dosent feel like youre surronded by suburban buildings but urban. while D.C. feels suburban with lots of office parks, homes, and more new things.

Yeah, we have beat this topic to death in the MD forum. I am sure if you search the Maryland forum with terms like "north" or "south" you will find them.

no way lol.
found this post.
I love Boston! I'd stay there if I had a choice. Beautiful Northeast. No drought up there. I love the "Baahston" accents! Great sports, beautiful snow (Raleigh gets some, but not nearly what Boston gets). Raleigh has college sports if you are into the ACC. Sorry, the ACC has not really accepted Boston College yet as there are no other ACC schools in the north besides Boston College.

Bmoreboy,
Come on, there are no office parks in DC? DC's downtown is three times the size of Baltimore and is completely built in. If anything, DC has all of the characteristics of a northeast city. Great transportation, core downtown area, cosmopolitan, walkable, density, diversity, etc...

The first battle of the Civil War was fought in Baltimore, when a pro-Confederate mob(a mob in Baltimore, what a surprise!)attacked Federal troops marching from the old President Street Station-recently refurbished and turned into a museum-to what is now Camden Yards, via Pratt Street.
Maryland was mostly pro-Union, but Baltimore was a hive of Secessionist activity, leading to Lincoln's harsh measures to keep the city under Federal control.
Baltimore's municipal amnesia managed to keep these facts obscure, until lately.
And by the way, Poe hated Baltimore, it was his least favorite city(the man moved, a lot!)of all the ones he had inhabited.
Naturally, that's where he died, and so, he's become associated with the city.
His only comfort must be that no one is quite sure if the body in that tomb is really his-and the annual toast by the cloaked visitor(rabies be damned, Poe died of the DT's and pneumonia!)
Thus endeth the lesson of the day.

Reason: left out an important fact!
