All of the neighborhoods you mentioned are safe in terms of not much crime reported. Do you want to live in the city or the surrounding areas? The city has some tough neighborhoods but also some very nice neighborhoods. The surrounding areas also have the same. You could go to the Baltimore Sun and click on their crime map to help clarify, but it is hard to advice because I am not sure as to what you specifically want.

i am not sure if i want to live in the city or not, I would like to be able to walk to shops, coffee etc... from apt - So I guess that puts me in the city. Are federal hill and canton the safest areas, I have been told that federal hill is not that safe?

Federal Hill and Canton are relatively safe, but everyone has different perceptions of safety. Try looking at Locust Point, just down Fort Avenue from Federal Hill.

Federal Hill and Canton are as safe as any other urban environment you would find in the upscale neighborhoods of Boston or Connecticut.

Nicholmn, If you define "safe" as crime free, you won't find it in Baltimore city at all......or many other cities for that matter. However, Canton and Federal Hill would probably be among the safer neighborhoods in the city. Pull up crime stats on both areas from the Baltimore Sun website. They'll be very helpful in deciding where you set up shop.

From experience, the "safest" neighborhoods are Federal Hill, Canton, Fells Point (although the obnoxious drunks are sometimes a problem), Roland Park and parts of Woodberry/Hampden.

Really, it all depends on the address of where you're moving to. Even portions of Federal Hill are "not as desirable" as others. (Light Street, yes - Swann Park, no. Heh.)

What amuses me is that the "safest" neighborhoods here now used to be some of the nastiest slums around...

I imagine with Jenna Bush buying in Federal Hill, it will even be safer.

I recommend Tuxedo Park, Roland Park, and Evergreen. They abut one another, and you can walk to everything needed. Yet still a short drive to everywhere. Fed Hill, Canton, Fells Point: nice places you will want to visit, but unless you've got a lot of money, you don't wanna live there.
