Default Books galore

One mystery has always been how come Baltimore, one of the nation's most segregated cities in many respects, was the only big city to desegregate schools immediately after the Supreme Court's 1954 ruling and on a citywide basis.
Howell S. Baum examines this in his new book, Brown in Baltimore: School Desegregation and the Limits of Liberalism (Cornell).
Deborah Rudacille's new book, Roots of Steel: Boom and Bust in an American Mill Town (Pantheon), deals with her native Dundalk. She touches racial aspects as well.
Antero Pietila's Not in My Neighborhood: How Bigotry Shaped a Great American City (Ivan R. Dee) is now in second printing, one month after publication. It is an all-American history about race and real estate, seen through the prism of Baltimore from the Civil War to the subprime mess.

Default Roland Park

By Our Own Roland Park Correspondent
"went to the Roland Park Civic League's cocktail party Friday night - talk about how things change here.
All the old WASPs are dead or in Broadmead. The crowd looked like the UN. Steel band. Black people. Asians. Jews! Not much lime green and hot pink."
