Hello,
First, thank you to all of you who offer your help on this site to folks in need, like me. I have perused the baltimore threads and am wondering if there's anyone who's familiar with the Providence or Boston areas and can offer some comparisons to neighborhoods. I'm looking for something similar to the east side of Providence (near Brown), Davis Sq., Brookline, Newton, or Coolidge Corner. I'll be moving this month from Providence and will be working up near Loyola. I'm hoping to find an urban, but safe, walkable, and relatively quiet neighborhood. I'm a single thirty something female, so I don't want to be surrounded by undergrads and clubs, but I'm also not interested in suburban life quite yet. I like neighborhoods with trees, coffee shops, markets, and 2-3 unit homes. I don't want to live in a high rise or a sterile, carpeted apartment building. While I'll have a car, I'd like to have easy access to public transportation and walkable necessities (groceries, bank, breakfast And of course, I'd like to feel relatively safe! So, in a nutshell, I don't need to be in the heart of the city's action, but I'd like to have access to it. I'm not interested in commuting from outside the city. I'd appreciate any suggestions you could offer for areas that might come near my ideal, and street names would be very helpful since I'm learning that you can't generalize entire Baltimore neighborhoods as safe/unsafe, appealing/ not so. Also, if you have an idea of typical 1 bedroom rents in those areas, that would be good to know. Please, no Baltimore bashing... the decision's been made ![]() Thanks in advance for your help. |

Check out the neighborhoods of Charles Village and Hampden they are located pretty close to Loyola, are walkable, and relatively safe. I don't know anything about how much you'd be paying for rent, but it will probably be cheaper than any of the Boston neighborhoods you named above.

Also search for threads on Mount Washington, a neighborhood in Northwest Baltimore City. There isn't a TON of stuff to do there, but it's more walkable than your average suburban neighborhood. There is a light rail stop, Whole Foods grocery store, Starbucks, tavern, a few restaurants, unusual clothing stores, and a deli. Also, it's close to Loyola, about a 5-10 minute drive maximum.
