What neighborhood are you looking at? In most Baltimore neighborhoods I don't see how that's possible. I know people who rent entire houses for considerably less than they would be paying for a mortgage alone at current prices, not even including insurance, taxes, and maintenance.

Yes, a definite no. You don't want to go north of Fayette in my opinion.

AGain it all depends on your time horizon and comfort level. Go and look at the 400 block at the very least. The whole Hopkins vicinity is changing very rapidly.

I live on East Baltimore and love it. You would be right by Butchers Hill/Patterson Park. That one is a go>

I'm focusing mostly on Hampden/Medfield and Hamilton/Lauraville. I'm not finding much for rent (admittedly, I haven't looked very hard yet) that's comparable to something I'd buy, in terms of bedrooms/square footage/condition, for less than $1400-1500 a month. And if I'm going to be paying that much, I'd rather be building equity at the same time.
Then again, what if I buy something and end up hating the neighborhood?

If you are a single female living by yourself....definitely do not move to any of the places you have mentioned. The most anyone being honest can say is this...if you are extremely careful, you will probably be ok....not definitly, but probably. That is as good as it gets.
