Moving to MD from Jersey and scared as hell!
Hey all I have posted on some other forum and I got positive feedback on relocating to Baltimore. However, I have read some forums where I get REALLY NEGATIVE FEEDBACK. I need help!!!!!!!!!! Desperate help !!!!!!! So here is my dilemma I am relocating from Jersey to attend Graduate School at the University of Baltimore. I have visited the school on many occasions during the summer and I loved it however I was there last week to register and I didn't really like it. I didn't like because I got lost and ended up in a Blue Light district and I was ****ting myself lol! I know the city has its problems but I use to live in Newark which also has its problems and I loved it not to mention I go into NYC all the time and love it as well. I am a real young female and I rather take time off and apply to more Graduate Programs rather then go somewhere were the possibility of me getting raped, killed, injured is high. Am I overreacting or what? Help please?
Also, is University of Baltimore a reputable school? I did my research and it seems good not to mention I can take some classes at UMD which is really nice. Let me know what you guys think I really value your opinions PLEASE BE HONEST =*)

what degree program are you in? also do u mean u of balt or university of md at balt? tom lennox goes to umb on here. im sure newark has bad areas. lol. it would seem that you just have to find out what the bad areas of baltimore are by asking people incl this forum and avoid those. well you did get lost. im guesing getting lost in newark could produce a bad result as well. just my gut response. haven't lived in either city. the bad areas in newark may be smaller. a fter all the city is smaller.

Honestly? Baltimore has some tough neighborhoods thats for sure. But, your location at U of B is good and there are ways to avoid the tough sections. I think you are overreacting. I am not familiar with U of B other then knowing some folks who attended it. No complaints and one prior student who received her degree there is now a Prof at U of Ohio in Columbus. Can't be that bad to get that kind of position?

I've lived here all of my life and I feel 1,000 times safer in NYC than Baltimore City. Esp Manhattan.
However, my bf works in one of THE worst areas in Baltimore City. I visit him alot at work. I lock my purse in the trunk, keep my cell phone (fully charged) in my lap, doors locked, windows up, and I make sure I have at least half a tank of gas. I always leave room in front of me when pulling up to a light (so I can get out of any situation that may arise) and I do not look at anyone when sitting at a light.

I am talking about University of Baltimore itself I am going for the Master in Industrial Organizational Psychology. I am really confused on what to do. One kid told me 5 of his friends got killed that is CREEPY and he lived by J.H. which I heard is a decent area. I am confused on my decision because of all this negative feedback. Also I want to go to a school with a good program my research indicated the UBalt is good just wondering if anyone who has attended can give me any feedback. Should I go or stay? I am only 21 and I don't want to go into a city that can possibly damage me lol.

This kid that told you that 5 of his friends were killed...were they involved in some unsavory activities? The reason I asked is because the possibilities of losing that many friends is rare.
Also which John Hopkins area was he talking about - the University or the hospital. That information would make a difference in what this person told you.
I just moved here over the summer and can tell you - the city is rough, but if you are smart about where you go, and who you deal with - you should be fine. I love living here.

I don't know anything about how good UB is for your major, but I can say that Balitmore is a really fun college town. There are tons of students and people your age, from MICA, UB, JHU, and all the colleges in the 'burbs. You'll have a great time.

I think the kid was playing with you. Either that or you are already hanging with the WRONG people. Any city has a certain degree of safety issues that go with it.
And for the person in NYC. There are plenty of areas in that town that can easily compete with Baltimore's badder hoods. You must have lived a sheltered life there.

As of November 30, there were 475 homicides in NYC. Although their rate is much lower than ours, there are still some VERY tough neighborhoods in that town.

Um no I am not sheltered lol I don't know that kid he replied to one of my other forums. He said he went to John Hopkins University maybe he was just trying to scare me I don't know. I don't know anyone in Baltimore all my friends live in Bethesda or Annapolis. I was excited to live in Baltimore as it does have many colleges and kids my age. However, the crime statistics are really really bad but I heard that it has gotten much better. Not to mention that Mount Vernon where the school is located seems to be one of the better neighborhoods. I was just asking for honest advice from those that live in the area. Thanks
