Default Working for Baltimore City or Baltimore County

I was curious if anyone works, worked, or knows someone who works or worked for Baltimore City or Baltimore County either in city/county administration, planning, housing/community or economic development? If so, what is/was their opinion of their employer? i.e "they like working there because.... or do not because like working there because.....reasons why I should work there...... stay away from this place the managers and employees are ...etc"

Thanks

Default My answer

Since your question is so awfully broad, here is my answer: If either offers you a job, take it. In truth, the departments you identified are unlikely to hire anyone at this point.

Seconded. It is **verrrryyy** hard to land any government job in this area (I tried for most of my 20s, and got nowhere; I know a few others who have tried also with the same result, so it isn't just me). The private sector is only slightly less difficult (excepting customer service and sales jobs).

The closest I got to a government job was either as a student worker, or through a temp agency. Come to think of it, the only way I was able to work throughout my late 20s was because of the temp agencies in the area.

Woodlands, your question appears to imply that you have a choice concerning which jobs you can have wherever you are. Getting a government job in the Baltimore area is nearly equivalent to the odds of winning the lottery. If you're comfortable with that, then come on down.

carthell, thanks for the advice.. I actually already live here in baltimore and was trying to find a job here as opposed to what I am currently doing..which is commuting to the dc area. Granted, I am thankful to be employed period.. but the commute does wear on you and I would much rather work and live in the same community. This would give me more time for leisure, family, and volunteer opportunities of interest.. (i.e. making the city a better place)

With that being said.. it seems like applying for a job with the City.. maybe to a lesser degree the County, is like pledging a fraternity/sorority. You have to jump through a bunch of hoops and know someone on the inside in order to get in. That is the case in many organizations and with the economy the way it is.. probably even more so now.

So I will just stick out the commute and keep my eyes open...and network with some employees from both organizations and see how it goes
