Hello
I am thinking about visiting Balitmore over the summer months. I am wondering what transit options are available for a day trip to DC and NYC? Any information or suggesstions would be helpful.

1) Amtrak from New York Penn Station to Washington D.C. Union Station

2) Cheaper, but sketchy. . . Chinatown Express Bus from Chinatown NYC to Chinatown DC

Nothing sketchy about a number of the bus companies that run that route these days...Bolt Bus, DC2NY, etc. They're reputable companies that have very high quality service; the Bolt Bus even offers free wi-fi.

To DC from Baltimore: Take MARC---cheaper than Amtrak. The MTA site has the information you would need.

Be advised that the MARC trains do not run on the weekends.

Here's a relatively new, cheap bus service that offers daily trips from B-more (Charles Village) to NYC:

MVP Bus

MARC is a good option during the week if it fits your schedule, but Amtrak from Penn Station is probably the best option for getting to DC or NYC. However, it can be pricey.

Much of what is outlined above has already been mentioned; I'm just organizing it into one post:

Between Baltimore and Washington
*Amtrak - from Baltimore Penn Station to Washington Union Station (expensive)
*MARC - from Baltimore Penn Station and Baltimore Camden Station to Washington Union Station (only runs on weekdays)
*Greyhound - from Baltimore Travel Plaza (east of downtown near I-95/I-895) and Baltimore Greyhound Terminal (about a mile south of M&T Bank Stadium) to Washington Greyhound Terminal (about 1/2 mile north of Union Station)
*There may also be Chinatown bus services that allow people to travel between these 2 cities

Between Baltimore and New York
*Amtrak - from Baltimore Penn Station to New York Penn Station (relatively expensive)
*Greyhound - from both Baltimore bus terminals to New York Port Authority Bus Terminal (located in midtown Manhattan 1 long block west of Times Square and 9 short blocks north of Penn Station)
*Megabus - from White Marsh park-and-ride east of Baltimore to New York Penn Station area (drop off/pick up point at on 31st Street near 8th Avenue at SW corner of Penn Station)
*Chinatown bus lines (various) - various pick-up/drop-off points in both Baltimore and New York

I'd suggest after doing those day trips to Washington and New York you also consider a day trip to Philadelphia. Many of the options listed above (in particular Amtrak and Greyhound) are also valid for Philadelphia, and both 30th Street Station (Amtrak) and the Philadelphia Greyhound Terminal are in Center City Philadelphia. (Actually, 30th Street Station is just across the Schuylkill River from Center City but you can either walk or easily take multiple train services to Center City from 30th Street Station.)
