If you're looking for something close, then I recommend Charles Village, which is due north of the area.
That immediate area is certainly not the murder epicenter of Baltimore. A simple look at the crime maps will tell you that. However, it gets very sketchy east of Calvert. There are a bunch of artist studios in the area between Calvert and Greenmount, and I've read about some adventurous rehabbers on Barclay. However, it's a pretty risky gamble at the moment.

USArmySoldier is on a distinguished road
I would not recommend that area. Just take a drive down North Avenue.. You'll see day or night you don't want to be anywhere near there. The best post on here is the Calvert Street border-line.

When it comes to Baltimore City, you want to live between Calvert Street and at the MOST west, Howard Street as your east west borders, and Preston the most north, and the harbor to the south.

Then you can live up near Wyman Park, but that is so hard to write on what areas are nice, its so block to block up there. Basically anywhere in Mt. Vernon will work. Once you get north up by Charles Theatre, you're in a whole new area....
