Default How about Harlem Park???

OK, I'm determined to make the move to B'More and commute to DC for work. You guys have been extremely helpful to be so far. How about the Harlem Park area? I'm wondering because the W. Baltimore MARC station is there? Is it as bad as the crime map is saying? Again, I'm finding some great deals on houses. I haven't yet explored that area in person. Any other suggestions on commuting to DC? Mt Vernon might be a little out of my price range.

Default Harlem Park and beyond

I would not encourage you to look at Harlem Park. There were grandiose plans for revitalization, as there have been several times since WWII. But except for properties around Lafayette Square, the area continues to be dismal.
Rosemont may be a different story. Ever since it changed racially in the 1960s, it has been a stable working-class neighborhood. It is at a crossroads because many of the old residents are now moving beyond the pearly gates and its future is uncertain. That future could be bright, if the proposed redeveloment of the MARC stop area takes off and the expansion of Coppin to the old campus of the Lutheran Hospital materializes.

I would agree that Harlem Park may not be best choice but that may depend on your budget and your tolerance for 'city life'..You may want to consider Union Square, Pigtown/Washington Village, Hollins Market, Ridgley's Delight to name a few.. All are realtively close to a Marc Station whether its West Baltimore or Baltimore Camden Station. Others worth mentioning that you can find a wealth of info on in this forum would be Bolton Hill, Reservoir Hill or Station North/Charles Village..all are relatively close to Baltimore Penn Station. Again do your research.. one can find pluses and minuses with any of the neighborhoods listed but all may be worth exploring with and without a realtor.

I love and hope that this plan gets implemented... I think I saw where its a 30 year plan which is a long time.. but that is probably how long it will take.. I like the notion of building over the "highway to Nowhere" that could add new buildings/residents and tax bases to the City... and the views from these platforms of downtown would be tremendous...not to mention the access to downtown Bmore and DC via the MARC. With this Plan, State Center Redevelopment, Stations North/Penn Station, Westport, and East Baltimore/Hopkins..... the City could be a real interesting place in ...the next decade or two.

I am sorry to spoil your party. The Harlem Park revitalization drive was to be spearheaded by Bank of America. So forget it. In fact, Harlem Park has seen numerous revitalization plans since the 1950s, some of which received national attention.
The results. Tell me what you see.

No -- it's worse.

Unless they're paying you to live there, those prices are still too high.
