Me and my sister are considering to room together and I was looking at some places in Columbia, MD. How nice a place is it? Is it similar to Silver Spring and Bethesda to DC? We may have to commute to DC. How bad would the commute be? Would we have to consider taking a subway or train, or car? Which option would be cheaper?

I don't get Columbia. I know some folks love it and more power to them but it is just a confusing mess to me. It all looks alike and I consistently get lost whenever I have to go there.

Now, in terms of your questions--
Subway is out. None available at this time.
I don't find it similar to either Silver Spring or Bethesda. It is an entity onto itself.
Someone would have to help you on that car commute to DC. I don't do it; at least not from Columbia.

I love Columbia, have lived in DC, Silver Spring, and Germantown. Columbia is great, different from those listed but close to all. The Marc is right there off 100 and it will take you right into Union Station, but not a far drive either. That being said it is confusing whaen you first begin to drive around but the shopping and the resturants are great it is also convient to everything in off rush hour driving. Good Luck!

If you are commuting to DC I would not recommend Columbia. As mentioned, no public transportation to DC and driving would be a real hassle.

I lived in Cola, MD about a year before moving to Baltimore.. used to take the MARC out of Savage.. There was some occasional bottle necks on 29 and 100 going to the station... rarely did I drive all the way to DC.. .but I did go to New Carrollton often to catch the Orange into DC. I avoided taking 29 down to Silver Spring.. too many traffic lights and urban sprawl to creep through.

MARC was ok...however if the Camden Line breaks down.. as it often does you would have to take the Penn Line into Dorsey.. which is further east of Savage down 100 and have someone pick you up..There are also several Maryland Commuter Buses that service the area.. but I am not sure if they goto DC or Baltimore if not both.. www.mta.com

I would move to Silver Spring if I were you.. Columbia is nice, very well planned community.. but it is very suburban and does not have great public transportation
