Default Best Grocery Store in Baltimore?

Moving to the area and wondering what the best grocery store is. For me, best means freshest produce and best selection (including what most grocery stores call "ethnic" food). I'm living in Mt. Vernon, so any ties go to whatever is most convenient. Thanks!

WHOLE FOODS IN HARBOR EAST!!! Why: GREAT selection of fresh fruits, meats and veggies. Organic and natural products. GREAT CHEESE SELECTION. And everything is so fresh. The employees and friendly, but not clingy and treated well by the company! The area is safe, clean and beautiful. There is an AWESOME wine shop next door. Good wine that the owner claims to have tasted. But hey I got some nice and cheap wine there! LOVELY fresh flowers at really good prices! YUMMY fresh desserts with NATURAL ingredients. Delicious prepared food bar.

If you live in MV, it's a 5 min drive. OR you can even catch a taxi to and from. THe cabbie might pick you up after you shop. You can also walk. When I was in shape I walked back with my Groceries. It's a long walk, but a good way to stay in shape.

You can also walk to the cab stand on Pratt street from there. I WISH they had a Wholefoods in MV. OR you can do Eddies because it's close...

Whole Foods is a well-known brand, and has stores both in Harbor East and in Mount Washington off of I-83.

Roland Park's Eddies (not to be confused with a store of the same name in Mt. Vernon and Charles Village) has the best meat and deli counters in Baltimore by a goodly margin, plus all of your favorite regular brands that Whole Foods doesn't carry. However, it's expensive.

For the best variety and prices, nothing in Baltimore beats Wegman's in Hunt Valley. The selection is huge and of good quality with a broad range of goods, including ethnic foodstuff.

I second the recommendation for Wegman's. It's even reachable by light rail. I also really like The Fresh Market at Quarry Lake. They have an excellent meat selection.

There is a Superfresh between Mt Vernon & Downtown.

SuperFresh Store Locator

The store is clean and has a lot to offer. It is great for the location.

I shop at the Superfresh often and love it. Very easy to get there by bus, so you don't have to walk with heavy groceries. The Whole Foods in Mt. Washington is accessible by Light Rail.

Don't forget:
Lexington Market for much of your needs including fresh seafood
Cross Street Market which isn't that far away
The Sunday Farmers Market under the JFX downtown
Southeast Baltimore for plenty of Mexican/Latin American goods

If you're living in Mt. Vernon, you'll probably go to the Eddie's on Eager St. quite a bit since you can walk there. Their roast beef was pretty good (real roast beef the last time I was there, as opposed to the fake processed stuff that for some reason the Eddie's in Charles Village sells).

In addition to the places listed above, sometimes you just need a regular old grocery store. The Safeway on 25th St. is quite close.

Friend lives within walking distance of the Mt. Washington Whole Foods, and it is a sharp store with a good fish selection.
