Well, it was more of a joke. But I do live right near Balmer and have worked there, not exactly a pleasant place. People there seem to have a lifestyle that is different than outsiders would expect, not quite northeastern but not really southern. They are some confused sort of mixture, and it is difficult to pinpoint the thing that makes it different here, but from my personal experience Baltimore is not a friendly place. You just have to adapt to the way of life here.

I don't think it's really that bad. It depends who you associate with. If you hang out with "the coconuts on the corner," like Rocky said, of course you'd have a different opinion. There are places where people just sit out on their stoops all day and probably don't work, hang out on the corner by the liquor store, etc. I just drive right past them and pay them no mind. If you work at Hopkins, you'll probably hang out with people from there. If you work at a university, you'll hang out with people from there. I don't see how it's that different than most other cities? If anything when I first moved here, people seemed friendly. They genuinely asked me about where I grew up and offered to give advice on things to do here...

I met a lot of friendly people too when I moved here. It was weird, everyone of them wanted a dollar for bus fare.

This "don't associate with drug dealers" line is getting old. Last trip to Baltimore, I never made it to the bar, because one of the girls we were meeting, not a druggie, got punched on Russell Street.

Well, in terms of homicides in the city it is pretty well documented that most of them occur as a direct relation to drugs. Sorry, if that is tiring to you but that is the fact.
In terms of women's safety, Baltimore may actually be a better bet than DC as it has a lower rape rate and a lower robbery rate. Of course that may not mean a lot in the grand scheme of things for someone considering a move here from a less "violent" place. I do wish Baltimore could experience more of the gentrification that has occured in DC. Of course, it helps to have the federal government doing business in your city. No shortage of dollars there.
I am sorry to hear of your friend's misfortune. I am curious as to how it occured though.

I'm not so sure about the don't associate with drug dealers thing either.
Who hasn't read about the 7 year old girl who was shot in the head by a stray bullet?

Also, what about the two teenagers who were shot by some random dude who then drove away, or the apparently random attacks on tourists in the inner harbor?

I'm sure it helps to not be a drug dealer, but I wouldn't think its safe all of a sudden.
Back to the original question...
I think my neighborhood (Harbor East) is pretty tight. Its all about having your surrounding neighborhoods be safe (something that is rare in Baltimore), so your neighborhood is even safer. You don't want to be living 2 blocks away from the projects.

I'm very new to this area but with the limited experience I've had and the research I've done, I think in Baltimore city, Harbor East is the only neighborhood with safe surrounding neighborhoods.

To the west, I have the Inner Harbor. To the east is Fells Point. North is Little Italy. South is the Harbor (nice view of the boats near my apartment building).

I realize I'm probably paying more to live around here than most other areas (though prices were still comparable to buildings I looked at near the baseball stadium). Its worth it. I can see little kids playing in the street at night, people going for walks really late at night, nobody in fear. Somewhat cosmopolitan.

Reminds me of NYC a little... except not as busy/ festive.

I think the folks in Roland Park may disagree with you. Locust Point is also pretty cut off. Oh well. I think you find these things out the longer you live here. But, your area is fine.

Look, yep---sh** happens. And it's sad. Innocent folks can be victims including yourself. I stand by my statement that most of this violence is related and akin to drugs, turf, and the wheelings and dealings associated with that. Hopefully the situation will improve. Until then, run those red lights!

I don't mean to sound like a commercial for harbor east but the good thing about it is that it isn't cut off. Its safe and convenient (except to the highway), which is rare in this city...unless you know different.

I just googled Roland Park and it seems pretty out there. Maybe thats a good thing though. I read on this forum that North of North avenue and you are ok.
Locust point is where Harborview is right? Seems like an ok place but a bit isolated. It was very serene though and the yacht club area was nice.

There are a lot of generalizations floating through this site. Parts of Baltimore north of North Avenue are not places you would want to go for a stroll. And parts of Baltimore south of North Avenue are perfectly fine. You are in one of them.
Locust Point is the neighborhood east of Federal Hill on the peninsula. Fort Street would be the main drag.
