driver A-If I were you, I would move to the burbs. Whatever, don't move to Manhattan:

New York Crime Map - Showing Crime in New York, NY - Crime Statistics - Crime Alerts - Crime Stops Here

Or Chicago:

Chicago Crime Map - Showing Crime in Chicago, IL - Crime Statistics - Crime Alerts - Crime Stops Here

Or Washington:

Washington Crime Map - Showing Crime in Washington, DC - Crime Statistics - Crime Alerts - Crime Stops Here

Or Philadelphia:

Philadelphia Crime Map - Showing Crime in Philadelphia, PA - Crime Statistics - Crime Alerts - Crime Stops Here

Also, you're wrong on the Perkins Homes. Across from Little Italy used to be the Flaghouse Homes which were turned to rubble about 10 years ago or so. The Perkins Homes are in between Fells and Little Italy and were built in the 1940s. They are not located on Eastern Avenue either.

No one should take my word for it or your word as to the merits of a particular area. That is why I wrote check out the crime stats for yourself. The crime stats speak for themselves. The quality of housing in those areas speak for themselves. Do you have some objection to someone looking at the facts for themselves? Further I did give credit to where it is due and that is the emergency health care in the city-none better.

Slug, It's very easy to sit in your armchair out in the burbs and dismiss entire areas because of crime statistics. There are good people living in both of those neighborhoods trying their best to help turn them around. They are doing much more than folks who scream about the city from their safe distance.
I have no objection to folks wanting to live in an area without crime. And I don't think I would personally move to either of those neighborhoods. But, I happen to know people and some very good people who are consistently trying to improve those areas and I will not dismiss them.

What is your suggestion for improving those areas? Do you suggest everyone in them move out your way?

By the way Driver A,
You consistently come on this site and whine about your situation and then ask folks questions about the city. Many people have answered your questions, yet, never a "thank you".
I now understand why it has been difficult for you to adjust to your new surroundings.

Geez... sorry Jon..I thought I thanked you for the recommendations on supermarkets. Also, I really do appreciate your and other people's input when I have questions. I'm more of a sporadic lurker when I read this forum so maybe I am sometimes not able to give a proper "thanks" at the right times.

I'm not trying to whine, I really do just want to get to know the area. I gave props to the fells point and the harbor east area not too long ago, raving about how nice it is to walk out my apartment and have the pier right there with boats parked.

However, whenever I come on here, I just want to be able to engage in an honest, serious discussion about my new city, no rose colored glasses or overly jaded views. Sorry if I write stuff sometimes that offends you, since I know you take pride in B'more.

You're welcome.
I don't wear rose colored glasses though. I understand that Baltimore has many issues. I have witnessed a lot of positive changes occuring since I have lived here. It frustrates me that the city isn't moving faster toward solving it's many issues. But I am still content living here and I enjoy what Baltimore has to offer.

From wikipedia:
The Perkins Homes are a public housing development in Southeast Baltimore located in between Fells Point and Little Italy bounded by Lombard Street on the North, Central Avenue on the West, Broadway on the East, and Eastern Avenue to the South.

Maybe you know better and they are wrong.
Also, just glancing at the NYC crime blotter, the density of crime is not nearly as bad, at least not in Manhattan. Not nearly as many angry fists or shootings all over the place.

All of the crime maps are awful!

I've noticed Baltimore has public housing everywhere and it seems to negatively affect areas. It would be nice to disperse them throughout the counties because the city just makes it to easy for people to move around areas. You could isolate all the projects in one area but it would be a total war zone.

Well, where in that article am I wrong other than stating they are not on Eastern? Have you driven up Eastern? Have you seen the projects on Eastern? The answer is no. Actually, they are not on Broadway either if you want to get technical.

The Perkins Homes were built in the 1940's; way before the southeast area started to gentrify. There were tons of housing projects torn down since then including the Flaghouse Homes which were directly next to Little Italy on Pratt Street.

Yes, it's obviously true that some areas of Manhattan are safer than others. It's also obviously true that some areas of Baltimore are safer than others. My point in posting those maps is that crime occurs in most cities. So, if you are offended by that or don't wish to be around that, don't live in a city.

Speaking of getting offended... why are you getting in a bunch whenever someone makes a comment about crime in Baltimore? Is that taboo for discussion? The crime here is worse than a lot of other places. That is the reality. Even taken into consideration the different neighborhoods in different cities, overall B'more has more crime.
Whenever someone brings up this reality, you say "don't live in a city" as if you are too big of a city slicker for the rest of us "country folk."

In actuality, I have lived in several cities in the past, and enjoyed living in all of them. Baltimore has potential I can see but I'm not used to the crime here.

A woman was shot thru the hand last week by a stray bullet in one of the parking lots at Johns Hopkins hospital! That is not "city life", at least not in my book.

If I (or anyone) bring up the crime, its usually to try and provide actual insight without BS for anyone reading (or sometimes to *****, but that should be allowed too), so they can try to avoid the bad areas.

Housing project (Perkins homes) a few blocks away from Little Italy... some people new to Baltimore might think that was good to know. Maybe thats why you start to see the blue cameras starting at eastern ave when you start to head north from harbor east.

I hope I don't come across as a "grumpy, city-slicker". I am not getting in a "bunch" about crime. I know it exists in Baltimore probably better than you. I have been here longer. I know it's an issue that has still not gone away. Have the rates gotten better than previous years? Yes, definitely. Is the problem over? No, definitely not.
Baltimore is my home. I don't have the luxury of choosing where I want to live. I work here and live here and I try to make the most of it. In doing so, I have actually gotten to like it, even with it's myriad of issues. It has grown on me. Do I wish it would be better? Of course I do. But I am not going to beat a dead horse about crime. It happens. That's the reality. I have learned to live my life here and enjoy the city regardless of it. I mentioned in an earlier post that I have experienced crime although (knocking on wood as I write), I have not experienced it in Baltimore to any major degree like I have in other cities.
If you choose the correct neighborhood for yourself and find interesting things to do, I think you could do well in Baltimore. Many have and many will continue to do so.
If you want to continue to bring up every event associated with crime, go ahead. It's not taboo. For myself? I don't stress about it. I have learned how to live in town without being affected by it. And having lived in other places, I have to say, Baltimore is a pretty nice town when you get right down to it. Sorry, if you find that remarkable but that is the way I feel.
