I guess i still feel a connection to the area because i grew up there in the 40's and 50's, mchenry, scott, barre, ramsay, fremont, washington blvd, portland streets.A lot of the homes in this area have been rehabbed and the neighborhood looks nice, plus there is new construction .I would like to hear from any one that grew up in that neighborhood in that time frame, lost touch with all of them. anyone know of someone, tell them.

I would LOVE to hear about what the neighborhood was like back then. My coffeehouse is on Washington Boulevard, right at Scott. The third building on the right if you're facing south on the boulevard. It would be interesting to get the scoop from someone who actually lived there during the 40s and 50s. Thanks!!

I will be posting some information about the area back then for you.
sounds like your shop is near where the woolworths 5 & 10 store was, it was at the corner of scott and washington blvd. The blvd. was a busy retail shopping area at that time with movie houses and major local dept. stores.
I lived at 742 mchenry st.which is now a double house known as 740 mchenry.
Mchenry st. and Ramsey st.used to go all the way to fremont ave, there was no MLK blvd. back then.
I now live on the eastern shore but i still have my doctors in the catonsville area of balto. county.
Have not driven thru the old neighborhood in quiet some time, perhaps i will soon.

I'm trying to find out information about Washington Village-pigtown. Specifically would be about the Camden crossing housing complex. I'm an intern who will be moving to Baltimore in the fall and I wanted to know the area before getting housing there. I want to know what is the area like? Their website said that it's "economically/racially diverse" and I was wondering if that is just marketing talk for "the ghetto" or what not. so anything you guys can tell me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a billion.
Washington Village AKA Pigtowne is going through some growing pains. I have lived there 90% of my life. You can spot the natives from the new comers with your eyes closed. Drug addicts, prostitutes & drug dealers walk side by side with the up-scale new comers. Newly built $500,000 townhomes are forcing revitilization projects on a scale never seen before. Within a mile of the famous Inner-harbor, Camden Yards stadimum, Ravens M&T Stadimum, Federal Hill. Every street has several rehab projects in various stages of completion. Real Estate prices are still vary reasonable thanks to the low-lifes. Eventually they will be driven out of pig towne so it can truly become Washington Village. But now it is a town with two very different faces.

Default Washington Village? NEVER!

Just for the record, I'm one of those "new" people...having lived here for only 7 years. But PLEASE don't call it Washington Village. Ick.

Goodbonn, it sounds like you lived right around the corner from where I live now! I'd definitely love to hear more about the neighborhood -- do you remember what the street number of the Woolworth's was? Or which corner it was on? If you ever come back to the old neighborhood, please let me know. I'd love to walk around with you!

I've lived in PIGTOWN (definitely NOT Washington Village) for 18 years. I've see a lot of changes. (To give you some perspective, I'm from a very, very small town.) Pigtown is NOT the ghetto. At it's worst during the past 18 years it was never the ghetto. It is a neighborhood that has been struggling with its identity. I've never had any problems walking around the neighborhood. I do it regularly. I walk to our little public library, I walk to the Harbor, the B&O Museum, Safeway. I'm looking forward to walking to Evelyn's for coffee someday soon.

I have a soapmaking business called Charm City Soaps. I'm proud to have my biz in the heart of Pigtown. I even have a soap called "Pigtown Rose" in honor of my neighborhood.

Please don't put down a neighborhood that is probably the most diverse neighborhood in the city. We have a lot going for us. Come to the Pigtown Festival in September and see what we're about.

Mmmm...I think I bought soap from you at the last Pigtown festival! If you're the same person who had a booth at last year's festival -- that was WONDERFUL soap! If you stop by Evelyn's, please introduce yourself!!

I've done the Pigtown Festival for the past 2 years, so you may have bought my soap last year. I'm not sure if there were other soapmakers there last year. If you bought from Charm City Soaps, it was definitely me and thanks for the compliment!

I will definitely stop in and say hi. Spring break is coming up soon (I'm a Baltimore City teacher!) so I'll have some free time to wander down the Boulevard.

I work pigtown almost every night. I remember one night I stopped one of the local characters in an alley (between Carroll and Cleveland) who was carring a plastic bag. It turns out he had about 10 bars of soap. Ironically, he was probably one of the most unclean persons I have ever met. Classic Pig Town.

Hmmm, was it some of my "Charm City Soap"?
