Are things really that bad? Where was that policeman shot last night? It sounded like it might be close to Pigtown. No?

No, it was on the other side of Hollins Market.
And no, things aren't that bad. If they were, I wouldn't live here.

New to Washington Village
I moved to Washington Village (yes, Washington Village) 5 months ago from Northern Virginia. Before I made my decision to move here, I visited the area on several occasions. I saw the trash on the streets and people walking around looking crazy but that didn't stop me because I also saw the potential of the neighborhood. I know some of you are going to be upset that I'm referring to the neighborhood as Washington Village but I don't care. IMO if we want to make better progress here, we need to start with the name. Pigtown refers to the stench and the slums (the way the neighborhood used to be) and Washington Village sounds like a great place to live (the way the neighborhood is right now). Alot of young professionals (just like myself) are moving to (or thinking about moving to) our neighborhood and they (just like me) don't want their neighborhood associated with pigs. It was Pigtown when pigs ran down Cross St to the slaughter houses but I live on Cross St and I have yet to see a pig. I really like my block. I walk my dog (I have a Westie) day and night with no problems. Everyone seems very friendly and caring and they want to make the neighborhood better. I joined the Citizens of Pigtown committee a month after I moved in because I want to do whatever it takes to turn our neighborhood around. The drug addicts, thieves, prostitutes, gang bangers, and winos don't take a day off, so why should we?
PS Please don't give me any grief about the name I choose to call the neighborhood. You can talk until you're blue in the face and I'm going to still call it Washington Village because that's what I feel it should be called, just like some of you feel it should be called Pigtown.

I really couldn't disagree with you anymore VA2Bmore. I am a young professional, too, that just moved to the city and chose Pigtown. Like Carol said, Washington Village sounds like a rest home outside Des Moines, IA. The last thing anybody needs to do moving into a neighborhood is to let the people know that the name of the neighborhood needs to change because you arrived and more people like you would like to have it changed. There is precedent here for "bad names" to make a great neighborhood...like Hell's Kitchen or all the bad news coming out of Harlem for years and now thats the place to be.
Personally I really like the name Pigtown. I agree there is a lot that needs to be done around here...as you mentioned above. Changing the name is not one of them.

I don't know why people bother with the "washington village" nonsense -- Pigtown is on the National Register of Historic Places. Hard to argue with that.

It's Pigtown. Period. And Washington Village really does sound like a nursing home.

Carol, its pretty clear to me, I am not sure what is so hard to understand. If you move somewhere, and you don't like the name...its time for them to change it for you. Period.
