Taking a job in DC and thinking about doing the Baltimore to DC commute. I am wondering what are the best Baltimore neighborhoods for making the commute as painless as possible. Any suggestions?

Defintely choose a neighborhood near the commuter trains. That would save travel on one end. Others would know better which station would work best.

I'd suggest Mount Vernon just south of Penn Station. Bolton Hill wouldn't be a bad bet either, though there are some rough areas just outside of Bolton Hill (to the west in particular I believe).

I've commuted for quite a while from Fells Pt to Cap. Hill via the MARC train. I take the 10 bus to Howard Rd and then walk a couple of blocks to the Camden Yard station. It takes me into Union Station. Not quite as many options as the Penn line, but not as crowded either. You can get a monthly pass to park at Camden Yards as well. It comes out to about 3.00 a day.

I live in Station North, and it's a great place to live if you want to be in DC quickly. Some days it takes me less than an hour from door to door (not kidding!).

Which is exactly why the city should be pouring a ton of effort into reviving that area to it's fullest extent. Think of the property tax they could get as revenue. I think a big turnaround will be when work is started on the hotel above the station.
