Default Electric Bill

So, my family and I are moving to Baltimore from South Carolina. I'm looking to rent a home in the 1,200 - 1,500 range. Anyway, I'm concerned about the Maryland electric bill.

I heard by many people that the electric bill in Maryland is CRAZY, an I was wondering it was true. Because noway I can afford a $300 + electric bill an still make rent an pay other bills. So, I was wondering if this is true, an if there is any loopholes, or assistance for lower middle class families?

MD electric rates are high. My bill runs from $180-$260/month. My house is 100 years old and not real energy efficient, nor do I heat with a heat pump or have AC, so my use is for cooking, hot water and lights. BGE, the largest supplier, has assistance programs but I don't know the qualifications. I'm sure the other ones do, also.

I should have mentioned that my house is about 1400 sq. ft., two story stone and frame construction and the water heater is at least 40 years old.

I have BGE and I'm on the budget billing plan for both gas and electric. It is currently set at $214/month. Amazingly enough, my actual usage has been below that and I currently have a credit. My home was built in 1898 and is also not energy efficient (about 1500 sf). I do not conserve energy (i.e., lights, TV, computer are always on and AC or heat always runs to make sure I am comfortable). I have seen these threads before and how people are paying well above $300 for monthly utilities. I must be very lucky or under the BGE radar because I'm finding my bills manageable.

On our 800 sq ft house built in the early 1900s we were paying well over $200/month during the summer. It has been without occupants for a few months now and it's still over $100/month.
