Looking for a nice safe apartment in Baltimore. What are the best areas? I am a female in my mid twenties and landed a job around light street. Also, willing to look outside in suburbs. Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't want to come off as rude but this question has been discussed ad nausum in this forum. If you're working on Light Street, you could probably walk to work from the Federal Hill area.

Your right Dave. I wrote the thread before I started reading the different posts. I will be working more towards the downtown area and from reading the posts I will start my search in the Mt Vernon area. I will also look in the area you suggested. Thanks

No problem this question just gets asked 30 times a week here. There are a number of places to look to rent. It all really depends on income, social environment and proximity to work. $1000 in Federal Hill gets you a nice studio apartment whereas the same amount will get you a 3br/2ba house in Pigtown and both are approximately the same distance from where you want to be.

If you are working in Mt Vernon and want a quiet neighborhood to live in then visit Bolton Hill. You can easily walk to work. The metro and light rail are very close so that's convenient too. There are a few shops in the neighbor.

Craigslist is probably the best place to see available apartments. People will list apartments on there that aren't in Bolton Hill so just be aware of that.

Mt Vernon/Mid-Town Belvedere is nice and perfect if you want more of an Urban feel. There are a lot of things to do.

18softballer, welcome to baltimore. unless you've got many friends or co-workers who live in the suburbs, i'd suggest starting in the city where you'd meet the most people. Mt Vernon/Mid-Town B, Bolton Hill, Charles Village and of course Federal Hill are ideal.

Fed Hill will probably offer the least for the money for rentals, but it puts you the closest to work and the most bars and pubs.

Mt. Vernon north of downtown is more affordable, gets what I think is the biggest mix of people (gay/straight/college/professionals) and also has great restaurants and bars.

Charles Village is further north, more hopkins oriented but still a great option.

Bolton Hill is NW of Mt Vernon and is more residential, quiet. Beautiful architecture.

Other great neighborhoods east of the inner harbor are significantly more expensive - Harbor East, Fells Point, Canton. You'd have to deal with lots of traffic on Lombard Street going west to work each morning.

Having moved around alot for work, I'd suggest starting with asking co-workers, but then factoring in your own preferences.

Good luck! Let us know where you wind up.

Thanks for your insight on the specific areas. I am meeting with a future coworker to look around the different areas. Thanks again.

Canton is the place to be for single twenty-somethings. Great bar scene and close to downtown. Pricey though.

Towson is good too.
