I was actually going to suggest living in Baltimore County. Maybe it's because I grew up in the area, but every racist person I knew moved to Harford or Cecil County to separate themselves from people of color. Rising Sun area particularly comes to mind. I am an adopted child of a different race from my parents, so perhaps I'm more sensitive (as your children would be). Just be careful of where you settle. You'll still see confederate flags in some areas of both counties and in spots on the eastern shore.

Please do your research before moving. I love this state, and have been a Baltimore City resident for 8 years. While I would really have to do my homework before putting children in the city school system, I have a lot of trust in the surrounding counties' schools. Just an fyi though - these counties are not immune to violence, so try to find the best parts of these counties for comparisons. There are some awful parts of BC and awful parts of HC. Good luck.

I have lived in Baltimore County all of my life. The neat thing about the areas I've lived in (Towson and Perry Hall) is that they are so close to everything.

I find it strange when I get outside of the county and find communities without everything that we have.

I've never experienced any crime and I've gone to nice schools. In the county area you can apply to a 'magnet school' which is a public school but you have to apply to get in.

For the past 6 weekends I've driven 3 hours to get to the eastern shore. During the winter we drive 3 hours in the opposite direction to the mountains where we can snow board and ski.

Baltimore County is a great place. Don't let Baltimore City's crime rate deter you from purchasing in MD.

My suggestion is to meet with a company that can help you find a home to live in. It may be easier in other states to afford a home in a nice area but that doesn't mean you can't find it here. You just have to work a little harder because even in Baltimore County there are great neighborhoods next to not-so-great neighborhoods. And when I say that I'm not saying they have a lot of crime or anything. I mean that those neighborhoods are just more tightly packed with other people (townhomes next to apt complexes, etc) or the area just isn't as well kept as others.

Default Confused about Md

I am getting ready to re-locate to west-coast, but I have lived in the Abingdon, MD area and have for 11 years, very safe area and close to APG...about 10 minutes, close to I-95
Homes are reasonably priced in the area
There is plenty of mix ethnic backgrounds in the area, I have not seen any significant issues regarding ethnic backgrounds in my area.

Are you looking to buy or rent?

If you want further info PM me.

Default Confused

Harford County is far from racist, there are many of mix-raced families in our area, my granddaughter being one of them. She is in 4th grade in the Abingdon area and has never had a problem. Please do not believe the poster from Balto County. There maybe a few small pockets of racism in HC, but believe me they are in BC also.
Harford County is a great place to live and alot less congested than Baltimore County.

Pm if you want more details

Default Welcome to Maryland!

ChrissyR -- I am so sorry that so many people paint a terrible picture of Baltimore City and Maryland. I have always lived in the city (never wanted to live anywhere else. We lived 11 years on Union Square, just blocks away from "The Corner" made famous by David Simon and HBO; yet we never were burglarized or had anything bad else happen to us. But one day my wife said she was sick and tired of seeing dope pushers, addicts and whores every day, particularly because they were "my people" (she is African American, I am a European). Pure accident took us to an Orthodox Jewish area. Neither of us is Jewish but we are happy here.
If you end up in Maryland, I am sure you could find something you like either in Harford or Baltimore County. Just try to find something close to your jobs because traffic is getting worse every day and sitting in a traffic jam robs you from time that you could use for something better. Also, APG is projected to get lots of new jobs, so that alone will increase congestion.
My main point is that there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Millions of satisfied people live in Maryland. But one has to be realistic. The recent murder wave in Baltimore has increased fear and racism (although nearly all victims have been black).
Let us know what happens to the job possibility. Once you know you are coming to Maryland, I'll be happy to point you to some resources.

ARound DC there are a lot of transplants from up north, mostly NJ and NY, and they bring a lot of problems, especially with their attitudes.
What is this supposed to mean? Hmm, let's see. New York, or Baltimore. Which city would I pick? Hmmmmmmmm... Safest city in the country, or a total ghetto. Sorry, but so long as people in Baltimore keep on killing themselves off in droves, it's the Baltimoreans with the attitudes, not the New Yorkers.

I am sorry but that is just not true. I do not know of many states where it is common place for kids to be bringing loaded guns to school. I don't just mean high school I am talking about kids as young as 4th grade.
So, Michigan is a pretty safe place for the most part, but Detroit, Flint, those types of places are dangerous...and mean bars on all windows, guns in elementary schools dangerous... so Maryland isn't corrupt... just developing IMHO. Maybe I'm wrong

No, I think you have a good attitude about it -- I don't think you're wrong. I really enjoy living here in Baltimore City, despite its ups and downs. I think a lot of it depends more on how you live rather than where you live, if that makes sense. Yes, I live in a city with a high crime rate...but I've had a great experience here over the past seven years.

For new people coming into Maryland their experiences from other areas of the country or world and their tolerances of what is going on in Maryland will dictate whether they will be negative.

It does seem that the Maryland board has alot more negativity then many of the other state boards I have been on.
The further north and east you go, the more negatives the boards....I'm not surprised. I'm one of those long-time residents (15 years) who HATE the changes here. I hate the new development, the traffic, the new crowds, the illegal aliens, the northern transplants, the increasingly liberal politics. I miss the good ol' days where people were laid back and friendly, where Rockville and Bethesda were suburbs instead of urban areas, where everybody spoke English (and I'm not even white!). The only thing they SHOULD be liberal about...protecting the enviornment, is not happening. We are losing farmland and forest at an alarming rate. All the new developments are pro urban designs that take away from the suburban feel we like.

Washington, D.C. is gentrifying and the ghetto is being pushed into Maryland (not Virginia).

I feel like I'm in a foreign country now especially with all the illegals and transplants from New YOrk, Philadelphia and Connecticut. I and most old timers have NOTHING in common with them, there is no way we can identify with those kinds of people, we have completely different cultures and values and lifestyles. Those two groups are trying to change Maryland (at least Montgomery, PG, and Howard Counties) so it resembles where THEY come from. The absolute worst people are the illegals and people from Connecticut and Long Island.
