I know Maine is very Caucasian, but are blacks typically welcome and treated right in Bangor?

Smile I live in Bangor

I think there is racism anywhere you go and Bangor is no different. It is a very friendly place for the most part. There are very few people here of any race other than caucasian though, and that can be a drag. Most of the people here are wonderful. I think you would like it, if you like the other aspects of the community. Good luck!

I lived in the Bangor area for 15 years, and never saw any indication of racism. I am white, but was friends with people who are Black. I don't remember ever hearing them complain or comment about experiencing racism in the area. Good luck with your decision

Mainers are more open and accepting than you would think from watching TV shows. There was a military base at Bangor for many years so the number of blacks is higher in Bangor than most cities. When you get out of the cities there are very few blacks. As an example, my wife was 16 years old before she ever saw a black person except on TV or in the movies. The three military base towns were Limestone, Bangor and Brunswick. The only remaining base will be Bangor in a few years and that's a reserve base. Limestone is closed and Brunswick will close soon.

I didn't mean to end this thread and I hope DataEast checks back in.

Maine just reelected it only sitting black Mayor. He announced his intention to retire and did not run for reelection. Some citizens mounted a write-in campaign and he was reelected by a landslide. I guess that's the best example of our colorblind society.

I do not know.

I do understand that as a white man, I can not know what a black man feels, nor how he is treated.

I can only suggest that you [or anyone] come to the Bangor area, and see what it feels like to you.

I will be honest with you and say that I did attend a private club meeting once in Old Town; and while voting over the new membership applications, the topic was raised that one of the new applicants was a black man, and another member raised the question of whether to allow blacks. I was shocked that anyone would even notice the race of an applicant. He may have been joking. It has been a year and a half, and I have not attended any functions of that club since that happened.

May God bless you.

Was that the article I posted? I don't recall it mentioning anything about race, if it did, I didn't notice. *That* is being colorblind. I'm tired of *everyone* being stuck on "race". As far as I'm concerned, if somebody acts like a decent human being I'll treat them like one. Act like an *******, and I'll reciprocate.
