Ridiculous. Guerrier is not much more than an average reliever.

Doesn't strike people out

Walk rate isn't spectacular

Batted ball rates are nothing special

He's been the beneficiary of some extreme low BABIPs.

.....

Don't like this signing. Too many years for a non-elite pitcher

Perhaps it will work out okay. Guerrier might be one of those pitchers about whom I've heard different announcers explain "He knows how to get the guys out who he needs to get out."

Which I think means that he takes em one game, or one batter, or one pitch, at a time and just goes out there and gives 110% and all he cares about is winning and he doesn't get distracted by all the controversy, just plays hard and....etc..

Twitter / Los Angeles Dodgers: #Dodgers acquire minor lea ...

Quote:
#Dodgers acquire minor league lefty Michael Antonini for Chin-lung Hu. Antonini has 25-26 career record with a 4.04 ERA in 96 G
As expected, Hu is traded. Hu was out of options and was unlikely to be on the major league roster.

Antonini looks like nothing.

Los Angeles Dodgers Top 20 Prospects for 2011 - Minor League Ball

Quote:
Los Angeles Dodgers Top 20 Prospects for 2011.

1) Dee Gordon, SS, Grade B: I still love the speed and athleticism, but he needs to do a better job using it. Stolen base success ratio and error rates are troublesome.

2) Jerry Sands, 1B-OF, Grade B: I think his bat is for real, should be a very productive power hitter. Ranks behind Gordon due to future position value but that is not a knock on Sands.

3) Trayvon Robinson, OF, Grade B: Has dramatically improved his skills the last two years and has always had the tools.

4) Kenley Jansen, RHP, Grade B: You have to love the stuff, so good he's effective even without stellar command. Does he close?

Quote:
Grade B prospects have a good chance to enjoy successful careers. Some will develop into stars, some will not. Most end up spending several years in the majors, at the very least in a marginal role.

Grade C prospects are the most common type. These are guys who have something positive going for them, but who may have a question mark or three, or who are just too far away from the majors to get an accurate feel for. A few Grade C guys, especially at the lower levels, do develop into stars. Many end up as role players or bench guys. Some don't make it at all.

All in all, the Dodgers system has a lot of very intriguing raw material in it, but there are a huge number of questions as well. It is not a thin system, but even the elite guys at the top have a doubt or two.
I agree with Sickels' assessment, the Dodgers system lacks an elite guy (Cause that guy is playing in Cleveland now) but has a lot of toolsy guys with potential. If one or two of them catch...

Dodgers, outfielder Marcus Thames agree on a deal - Los Angeles Times

Dodgers, outfielder Marcus Thames agree on a deal

In other news, the Dodgers are close to signing veteran outfielder Gabe Kapler to a minor league contract.
I'll have to look at this move in more depth.

My gut reaction is I'd rather have Gwynn in CF, and Kemp and Ethier in the corners.

I do like Gabe Kapler

Filihok: Dodgers' leftfield options: Marcus Thames

Quote:
He's a better hitter than I thought. Especially if used correctly.

This is Thames' average line vs left-handed pitchers for his career and last 3 years (per 600 PA)

Career: 540 AB, 143 Hits, 32 HR, 54 BB, 134 K, .264 BA, .333 OBP, .505 SLG, .358 wOBA
Last 3: 537 AB, 142 Hits, 33 HR, 54 BB, 147 K, .265 BA, .332 OBP, .498 SLG, .356 wOBA

This is Thames' average line vs right-handed pitchers for his career and last 3 years (per 600 PA)
Career: 545 AB, 129 Hits, 37 HR, 43 BB, 166 K, .236 BA, .296 OBP, .480 SLG, .329 wOBA
Last 3: 543 AB, 136 Hits, 36 HR, 46 BB, 165 K, .251 BA, .307 OBP, .481 SLG, .337 wOBA

Thames is obviously a better hitter vs lefties. Which is the reason that he was signed. The Dodgers have Ethier, Gwynn, Gibbons, and Paul as left-handed hitting OFers and only Kemp as a right-handed hitter. Players with wOBA between .350 and .360 (as Thames has vs lefties) are: Derek Jeter, Vlad Guerrero, Robinson Cano, and Carl Crawford.

Unfortunately, only about 30% of at bats come against left-handed pitching. That won't be the case for Thames this season though. Teams have already realized that Thames hits lefties much better as 43% of his career at bats have come against lefties, including 60% last season.
