I read Oklahoma City is talking about building a ballpark for relocating a team to the city in 2012. Rumor is the Rays are in talks about moving to Oklahoma City. Does anyone have any news on this?
I never understood why Florida was given a 2nd baseball team only a few years after the Marlins made their debut. It seems to me that baseball is just not very popular in the state of Florida. Anytime I see Marlins or Rays games on sports center highlights the audience is half empty.
Spring Training is still pretty popular, I believe. This just lends support to the idea that people don't want to give up their old teams when they move.
Well if this happens, St Pete asked for it frankly.
Oklahoma City has the thunder, they appreciate their sports. Too many transients here and there seemed to be lots of issues with the Trop and people complaining they needed a new stadium yet cant even fill up the Trop. If this happens, consider St Pete officially toast.

I follow the team pretty closely and have never heard anything about Oklahoma. I've gone to probably 50 games over the last year - but to tell the truth, I could live without them. It would disappoint hundreds of thousands of people who enjoy watching them on the tube (but don't necessarily go to games in person). I doubt if Oklahoma would do any better as far as attendance. I can't see the NY-based owner to move to Oklahoma.

Just searched the internet about anything on this - nada. Not going to happen for Oklahoma City, only 200 miles from Dallas. Rangers own that market.
Tampa's market is much bigger than OKLA, but I guess so was Seattle's and you go their team, right?
The Rays are seventh in attendance when adjusted for population (TB area one of the smallest metro areas in MLB)
The Rays are seventh in TV ratings, both for total household viewership and ratings per capita. The 100k households who watch faithfully every night are double of what San Diego gets, double of what the Reds get, almost 30,000 more than the Texas Rangers get, more than most teams.
Location of the Trop is probably the worst in the entire TB area.
Only 19% of the metro area population lives within a 30 minute car drive, the lowest such ratio in all of baseball.
Particularly high unemployment in the area. Aside from Detroit the Tampa Bay area has been hit the hardest with high unemployment, foreclosures, etc.
School nights are tougher sells because of the aforementioned location and long-drive issues.
HAHAHA. you actually read that in someones post in another thread on this forum as a possibility and started your own thread to start the rumor. get a life.
