Default Dodgers minor leaguer Jerry Sands

Do anyone know when he'll possibly hit the big leagues. He's a 1B/OF. LA needs a left fielder. He was named Dodgers minor Leaguer of the year. Hit 35HR and 93 RBI in AA this year. I've been hearing more and more about him lately.

LA needs a center fielder. Ethier should be in left and Kemp in right. Or, more drastically, Ethier should be at first and LA needs a LFer and CRer.

But anyway. I don't know much about Sands, but seeing as how he spent only half a year in AA, I don't think there is anyway LA is counting on him next year. Probably a Mid-season call up in 2012.

Since LA probably won't do what I suggest with Ethier and Kemp, look for Xavier Paul/Jamie Hoffman/a cheap free agent in left next year.

Dodgers offseason

Yes, but that doesn't have much to do with Sands

I don't know anything about his defense, but the Dodgers seem to be looking at him as a 1st baseman or left fielder.

The fact that he was promoted in mid-season from the low A Midwest League to AA Southern League, and maintained his power even with a two level jump, is pretty impressive. Add in that he only turned 23 last week, and maintained a decent BA and BB/K rate, and he looks pretty promising.

Since this thread come up I've done a little digging and there seems to be some though about him moving to third base.

22 years old is pretty old for low A-Ball. He did play well in AA so that's encouraging, but there was significant drop-off.

He's big, he's strong, his plate recognition is average at best...Looks like his ceiling would be an good everyday player, unlikely he is any kind of a star in the making

He's not really a big name prospect because he's so old. Even though 23 is still young it's not young for a prospect. I don't see him getting any playing time next year but like previously mentioned. I'd expect a call up in 2012. Maybe starting on opening day in 2013. By the end of 2011 the Dodgers will know what they want to do with Loney. So if Loney still shows no improvement in power at first base you could see Sands play there.

I don't see Loney's power improving.

Slugging has been decreasing

Isolated power has been decreasing

http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs/4556_1B_season_mini_9_20101003.png (broken link)
Flyball rate (the blue line) has been decreasing

None of these things portend and increase in power

An interesting thing about Loney (which is similar to Jose Bautista) is that he kills the ball when he pulls it, but it doesn't pull it that often.

Loney wOBA/SLG/ISO
RF: .399/.613/.280
CF: .360/.491/.140
LF: .316/.438/.134

Most hitters hit for less power going the other way. Loney's split is a bit more severe though.

Also, Loney hits to the opposite field more often, and pulls the ball less often, than most left-handed hitters
% of balls to: LF/CF/RF
Loney: 19.4/56.5/24.1
Lefthanded hitters: 17.2/56.1/26.7

So, unless Loney makes a conscious effort to start pulling the ball more, it is quite unlikely his power will increase. And, even if he does, he's still unlikely to turn into Jose Bautista
