The Royals released first baseman Kila Ka'aihue today.
I'd be in favor of the Dodgers picking him up.
Well, not to get too nitpicky, but he wasn't released, per se. He was designated for assignment(DFA'ed), which means the Royals have removed him from their 40-man roster and have 10 days to do one of the following:
a. Trade him to another team.
b. Pass him through outright assignment waivers and (assuming he clears waivers), send him to one of their minor league affiliate teams. If this happens, he'll remain in the Royals organization but won't take up a 40-man roster spot.
c. Pass him through unconditional release waivers and (assuming he clears waivers), release him, making him a free agent. If this happens, he'll be able to sign with any other team, including the Dodgers.
(Having said that, the end of the 10-day DFA period will coincide with the end of the MLB season and the beginning of the playoffs, so I'm fairly certain that even if Ka'aihue is released and becomes a free agent over the next week or so, he'll probably just have to sit on his hands and wait for free agency to begin in early November, as no team is going to sign him to an MLB contract for what essentially amounts to a few days, At least IMO.)

Hope that helps.
You're correct that he was DFA'd.
If he makes it to free agency, however, the team that signs him will continue to control his right beyond this season as he only has about a year of MLB service time.

Oakland traded for him yesterday...
