Good: They scored a ton of runs tonight. Bad: Burnett couldn't last long enough to get a decision. Good: Burnett's 4.54 ERA is better than last year's 5.26. Bad: Burnett is signed through 2013.
Really getting the sense that the Phils and Giants really do not like each other. A pretty good bench clearer tonight. Once again the Giants throw behind the Phils...
But hey was good to see Hunter Pence right in fray, he is fitting in just nicely
Am sure the Video to come but here was the WS from last year and this one was a notch up, oddly Sanchez started tonight.
An interesting NL West game today between the Rockies and the Dodgers.
Both teams had rookie pitchers squaring off against each other, both guys could be important parts of their teams and the NL West race for years to come.
Juan Nicasio, pitching for the Rockies, put up a line of 5.6 innings pitched, 6 hits, 5 earned runs, 1 home run, 2 walks and 5 strike outs. Batted Ball FIP says that that performance would usually give up 4.46 runs.
Ruby de la Rosa, the Dodgers' rookie, put up a line of 6 innings pitched, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 0 home runs, 4 walks and 5 strike outs. Batted Ball FIP says that that performance would usually give up 3.19 runs.
Dodgers lead 5 - 1 in the short term and in the long term as de la Rosa is obviously better than Nicasio.
Jinx?
de la Rosa is undergoing Tommy John surgery and is likely out for most of 2012.
Happ 2011
7.54 K/9, 4.75 BB/9, 1.28 HR/9, 4.51 SIERA
In 2011 Happ is striking out about the same amount of hitters, he's walking a few more and giving up a few more home runs. SIERA estimates ERA based on walks, strikeouts and batted balls. SIERA says that Happ should have had an ERA of 4.40 in 2010 and 4.51 in 2011. Happ is pitching nearly identically in 2011 as 2010.
So why the huge disparity in ERA?
Happ 2010 (with Houston)
BABIP .265, Runners left on base = 73%
Happ 2011
BABIP .322, Runners left on base = 61%
Batted balls are falling in for hits 21% more often in 2011 than in 2010. This is putting more runners on base and allowing more runners to score. Batted balls are largely out of the pitcher's control.
Happ isn't as good as he looked last year, and isn't as bad as he looks this year.
He is currently the oldest active player in MLB at age 45.
Since MLB began keeping track of pitch counts in 1988, he has the record. 172 pitches in a ten inning game.
Last season he became the second oldest first time All Star, only Satchel Paige was older.
His fastball which averages 78 to 79 miles an hour, is and has been the slowest in baseball for years.
And right now he is on the mound in Minnesota, trying to win his 200th career game, which would make him one of 111 pitchers to reach that mark.
It is on ESPN, so tune in and watch Tim Wakefield
