One game tie-breaker in Tampa Bay by virtue of TB's 12-6 record over the Sox this season. As I type this TB is losing 7-0 to the Yanks in the 6th and the Sox lead Baltimore 3-2 in the 7th.
Albert Pujols drove in one run tonight, giving him 99 for the year. This is the first season in his 11 year career where he failed to drive in 100 or more.

He also finished with a .299 BA, below .300 for the only time in his career. In game #161, with 98 RBI's, he lost one by a runner being thrown out at the plate, merely on the defensive choice not to concede a run for an out. With all his GIDPs, there must have been at least one on which a run scored, which would have been 100, except for an 100-year-old arbitrary rule edict that there is no RBI on a GIDP. Or a no-out RBI in which the runner was held at third, and Holliday got the RBI. And I bet he lost at least one hit on an official scorer's ruling of an error that could have gone either way.
His RBIs were seriously harmed by the fact that over the last two months of the season, His Manager (who shall remain unnamed) had him batting third in a lineup with a leadoff man who finished with a .298 OBP, probably the lowest OBP of any leadoff man in the history of baseball. It's like expecting a #2 hitter to drive in 100 runs.
In every year of his 11, he has batted over .299, with 29 homers and 99 RBI's. By what logic is that a less compelling milestone than .300/30/100, merely because his ancestors millions of years go evolved 5 fingers instead of a more arithmetically useful 6.

Arbitrary means that there is no reasoning behind it, it was a random decision. That is not the case with the decision to deny someone an RBI who has done nothing more than hit into a double play...it was clearly a case of the rules makers deciding that the batter did not deserve an RBI.

By that same logic, what is admirable about reaching the artificial distinctions of .300/30/100? If we admire someone for reaching those goals, regardless of the evolutionary history of math, then it is perfectly reasonable within that logic to be disappointed if a player falls short.
I wonder if you happened to notice that the winning run scored by Philadelphia, the run which enabled the Cardinals to enter the post season this year...was scored because Atlanta elected to hold the runner on firstbase. The weak groundball was hit right to the area where the Braves firstbaseman would have normally been playing had they opted to ignore the runner on first and concentrate on the out.
And...
You devoted pages of posts explaining to us what an idiot Tony LaRussa is...and somehow or other that idiot has his team in the post season once more.
So, will you now be explaining how the Cardinals won "despite" Tony ?
When I looked at the standings about 2 weeks ago, I figured both Boston and Atlanta were safe bets on the Wild card spot. Gotta give credit to St. Louis and Tampa Bay though, they refused to go down without a fight.
I must admit I'm bummed about the Braves choke because me and one of my friends were thinking about making a trip to see a playoff game at Turner Field. Guess now we'll just save that money for something else.
HELP! No games tonight, I'm in withdrawal. How come the NHL hasn't started yet. Come on, NHL, let's get with the programme. (A little Canadian spelling there.)
