Carlos Quentin has three doubles already, chasing Earl Webb. Quentin is on a pace to hit 243 doubles. Mrs. Glebe better get ready for a trip to Chicago in mid-May.

John Sterling is on a pace to say, "It is high.....it is far.....it is GAHN!" 405 times this season.

But I still prefer Mel Allen's "Going.....going.....GAWN!"

Pujols GIDP pace plummeted to only 216 today. He grounded out three times with a runner on first, but was robbed of DP possibilities twice because there were already two outs. It's just not fair.

After 9 games, Pujols GIDP pace has dropped to 108. In all fairness, if he had not hit into any on opening day, it would still be 54, well ahead of the MLB record of 36.

The Cardinals starting infield, including Pujols, is batting .200 prior to today's game. Their closer, Ryan Franklin, is on a pace to record 60 Blown Saves.

In the Doubles race, Carlos Quentin is on a pace to hit 108.

Chief Wilson's Triples record appears safe, with only a handful of players on a pace to come close to 36, including Carlos Lee who already has two. His career high is 3, and he has only 16 in 13 years.

Kansas City's new outfielder, Melky Cabrera, is off to a blistering pace in his assault on Jimmy Rollins' single season at bats record. (716-2007) By walking just once in 47 trips to the plate, the Milkman has collected 46 at bats, a pace that would give him an amazing 828 for the year.

Melky has also made 33 outs in his first nine games this season, an average of 3.66 outs per game, which projects to an astonishing 594 outs over 162 games, a figure which would break the sacred record of 560 set by Omar The Outmaker Moreno in 1980. (Although Omar will remain King of Outs, he has three of the top nine single season outs made totals.)

Jonny Gomes of the Reds has suddenly developed an extremely discriminating batting eye. Though he is hitting just .227, his OBA is a whopping .486 thanks to the dozen base on balls he has been issued in 2011. His pace projects to 227 free passes, which would rank him second all time behind Barry Bonds in 2004 who walked 232 times. Gomes lifetime OBA is .331, he drew just 39 walks in 550 plate appearances last year, so there is no precedent for his new patience at the plate.

The Minnesota Twins have not been behaving like contenders so far, their offense seems to be taking the first month off.

They are last in all baseball in scoring runs with 33...3.0 per game, and have smashed but three..count em...three team homeruns through their first eleven games. That projects to scoring only 486 runs for the season and 59.3 homeruns....the Twins vs Maris.

Cardinals won 101 games in '85 and went to the World Series, with only 87 homers.

That particular Cardinals team also led the NL in scoring runs. They were first in BA, first in walks..and naturally first in OBA as a consequence. That was also an extremely fast team, leading the league with 314 stolen bases. The absense of homeruns left them at sixth in team slugging average, but their OBA mark was high enough so that they were first in OPS. And weren't they the team that had five switch hitters out of the eight starters?

If the Twins can lead the AL in BA, OBA, OPS and stolen bases, then maybe they won't need the homeruns.

After 4 hits last night Ichiro has 22 hits in 18 games. At that pace he would finish the season with 198 hits.

The first time in his major league career that he would not get to 200 hits for the season.
